Mrs RSE ran one of these from new. I was thinking just the other day how I missed it (bizarrely and without reason). It was a decent old lump. Stereotyped hewn-from-granite feel. Indeed felt a bit like a bigger, slower, but similarly well screwed together R129.

The colours and wheels on that particular example may narrow its appeal somewhat of course.

Yet, I'm still firmly and unshakeably of the belief that this was a decision she'd already made long before the event........rather than after!

Thanks for all the positive comments re the w210.

Bit of a bump for Baryonyx as his post seemed to be lost in all the e38 nonsense chat. Looking forward to meeting you Saturday!
You've done alright selling cars on the barge thread, haven't you hehe
As you know Ross, good cars always sell. I need to get a picture of the Jag and the Mercedes together, doubt I'll ever own two v8's again at the same time! biggrin going to miss the Jag, it's a nice car but needs must!

Right, let's all move onwards and post some barges.

Regarding the 53 plate E320 posted above:

I believe that what you have to look out for on these is the Valeo radiator. Some later cars have a different radiator (I forget the OEM name) but the cooling system on cars with the Valeo item is connected in some way to, or via, the gearbox and the bork is that the coolant can get into the gearbox and completely shag it.

At some point they changed the cooling system. It was either very late in the pre-facelift (2005) or on the facelift cars (mostly 56 plate onwards).

Also on the pre-facelifts I think there is some fancy linked braking system to be aware of. I think that is less expensive to sort out when it borks, but that again was removed on later cars.

If you are looking at the E500 (I know you're not but anyway...) these have air suspension as standard which never lasts forever. I've seen 320s and 350s with it fitted but I think it was an option on the 6 cyl cars.

I would however buy a W211 (?) E Class, particularly the later facelift cars as they are supposed to be very good as the various issues I have commented on above were designed out. Or so I understand it, anyway.

Not sure if the CLK counts as a barge, but I think some if not all of the points above apply to that car too.
Thanks for your response - very helpful. Would there be anyway of identifying whether from test drive or inspection if the valeo radiator has / is going wrong.

Funny you mention the CLK as that is what I'm actually after - however with my budget of 6k I'm struggling to come across any facelift CLK (so late 2005 onwards). Which I'm actually quite surprised as I thought that'd be healthy budget for one. There are some out of there but either have moon mileage and / or are diesel. I definitely want a petrol. So this is why I turned my attention to the E Class which although while not being facelift still looks a lot nicer / fresher than a pre-facelift CLK which is really beginning to show its age.

As evidence in my defence in the intervening 31 years, I have presented the paucity (though not complete absence) of contributors to my "Complaints/Suggestions Box".

Well happy to say I'm now the owner of a w210 e55 estate. Great day yesterday, arrived into Heathrow, the seller picked me up and off we went to look at the car. All as described, my biggest concern was rust but the body work and underneath are in good condition, everything else checked out so went a ahead and bought it. The chap selling it was a true gent, within 5mins of meeting him and before I'd seen the car I had a good feeling about the whole thing. Might sound a bit strange I know.

The drive home, the first thing to note is the noise! cloud9 Lovely deep v8 burble. Came back via the M40>M42>M6(toll)>M6>M74. Couldn't believe how busy the M40 was, makes me realise how fortunate we are in the north with how empty in comparison our roads are. Traffic was moving well though and the lane discipline is far better than it is up here. Didn't hang about but kept it sensible (most of the time) had a few encounters and I can only imagine the conversations in the other car about "that old Merc" evil (Its debadged only the amg exhaust gives a hint) The mid range is fantastic, it really does shift. I only stopped at the services outside Carlisle for 10mins, so says it all about how comfortable I was. Average fuel consumption for the whole run was 26.7mpg which I thought was brilliant considering.

The car needs a good clean and yesterday added about a million dead insects to the front of it. But feeling very happy about my purchase!...

Looks great. Glad it turned out to be a solid car. I've always liked the W210 but have been put off having one due to their tendency to rust. It's good to know there are still some out there worth buying.

Kudos. Good car and good to hear the purchasing gamble paid off in style.
I have just booked a ticket to go and buy Cat220's XJ this Saturday. I hope I am too am afforded some good luck on another barge thread purchase. The journey up there doesn't sound too arduous. Train to Newcastle in the morning, then one East Coast Rail to Edinburgh, then a transfer to Glasgow Queen Street shortly afterwards. About three hours all in. All being well, drive back should be a serene shuffle down the A74 and A69 to home.

Then, hopefully, I can stop moaning at the wife about having to drive her to car to work!

EDIT: Just one quick question regarding insurance, but what is the best way to go about arranging it for the day? In the past when I've been intending on buying a car, I usually ring my insurer and they put the prospective car onto my policy for a month and keep my current car insurer, then the next month I typically switch the policy to cover the new car as the primary insured vehicle and keep my old car on as a second vehicle until it sells.

Is there a cheaper way to sort the insurance short of just changing outright on the day? As confident as I am when I go to look at cars I expect to end up buying, it would be a costly mistake to change the policy outright before a test drive, only to not end up buying the car and having to change it back. Costs in these cases have typically been around £30 for a month of insuring both cars, and the last time I did it was when I had my A8 and my Impreza. Day insurance is typically more expensive.

I've had to do this a few times in the last few years and adding a second car to my insurance has always been the best value way of getting short term cover, even though it cost me over £40 for 2 weeks of cover. It's what I did when I bought my E38 from Ross.

Same motor that the jeweller was chauffered around in at the beginning of 'Robbery'

An ex BLMC contact of mine said they couldn't give these away when they were new and they sat in compounds for ages.

Just found on youtube, excellent car chase afterwards as well :

Yep, looking forward to the trip now!

The E38 diversion was an interesting one, as Derin points out, where have all the decent E38's gone? Just the other day I was looking at a rather good looking 728i when it struck me that it had been some time indeed since I'd last seen an E38 in that standard. They used to be plentiful in this thread, but in the past year they have quietly disappeared for the most part!

It always is.

I shall have to keep striving. I can't say I've ever "turned" a lesbian although I did once turn a perfectly straight woman into a lesbian but that is for another thread.

Yes, on uphills in particular the gearbox will feel as if it is slipping between 1500 and 2000 rpm. This could just mean it needs a top up of ATF but prepare for the worst.

If you buy one in fine fettle and later identify the Valeo rad it is worth changing it as cheap insurance, even radiators made after the so called 'safe date' have exhibited the problem.

Loads of MB forum threads about this issue for further reading.

I made the same comment a few weeks or a month ago, decent e38's are becoming very thin on the ground.

I can remember a few years ago, maybe longer, there were plenty of good cheap E34's and E32's available then they dried up in what seemed like overnight. I suspect the same is happening to E38's. Shame. I would love a minty 750 to tuck up and use sparingly, should never have sold my calypso LWB.....

It's funny, as I sent my brother a link to the old E38 I found. His comment was "those old ones look so much more 'executive'". I couldn't help but agree. I love the avant garde styling of the E65 but the E38 had an uncanny look of class about it's exterior in a typically German fashion. An E38 was heading the other way along the A69 yesterday afternoon as I was cruising along, it's got the size and proportions that stand out from a distance in an eye-catching manner. I did not think, however, that the interior of the BMW was quite the match of it's competition.

So the wife and I took a train trip to London to look at and hopefully buy a lovely green Volvo V70. After traipsing through the p**sing down rain to the garage, we're informed he sold it 10 mins previously despite me telling him I was en route to him. However, he did have a dark blue V70. We took it to for a drink before and had a look round it. He wanted a bag of sand but managed to get him down to 700 notes. Heated cow, cruise, climate AND sunroof. Loving it so far after a 130 mile drive back to Lincolnshire.

Tried to view that 500SEL but they gave me the impression it was pretty much sold, annoying. That was about 6 weeks ago.

Good news on the E55 cat, the noise is ace isn't it. If I stick to 70 and cruise on my commute i'm getting 26 mpg. Really impressed so far! Although its going in for the service next Tuesday. £975.. and that's before they find anything! Had a problem with the alarm too, interior sensor setting the bloody thing off!

The flipside was he probably told the buyer of it that he had someone else coming to buy it in half an hour - people on PH always think that's a lie when dealers and traders say that. It isn't always and leads to exactly the situation you describe.

...which is also exactly why you didn't get called en route and told th ecar you were appointed to see had been sold. You still bought *something* from him. Canny trader. smile

But what do I know eh? hehe
