Very smart, though I wonder, would it have killed them to make the seats a little more sumptuous? That is always my thought when looking at E38's, as I was today, when I stumbled across a rather nice E38 740i. A very early one, judging by the wheel choice.

Hadn't seen this. Tbh if this or JonnyDM's old one had still been for sale @ £5k they'd be on my drive rather than the clk.
Mine went for a lot less than £5k!

It wouldn't have even cost very much to put right, but at the time I didn't have the funds or inclination. As I understand, the lump went to an E46 in Africa. Buyer was a ****, naively gave him the V5 as 'trader', obviosuly didn't SORN or declare anything and I got stung for an RFL penalty!
Swear I saw it for sale a few months back? Guy wanted a px of a track car and was sorely tempted!

Was st timing for me as I was buying my house at the time otherwise I'd of snapped it up. Was the perfect colour combo!

Yes that's the one with the fake wheels I mentioned a page or two ago.

It looks to have sports contours, which is always the first thing I look for in an e38 (trying to get them heated is another matter, if I find one so equipped, be it a 2.8 or 4.4 I'm going to find it very hard to not to purchase)

The 728i however looks like a cracker. Gorgeous contours.

Hopefully a minor issue Ross.

Very classy and within a negotiation (ish) of top of budget http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C533482#

I think that's tremendous!
I've always thought these very classy cars, I think after seeing Tom Cruise drive a smoke silver one with that school mistress type in The Firm. Such quality. Anyway, how about this one? Spec is low (not necessarily a bad thing from a bork point of view) and the driver's seat looks ropey but all the same...

Looks great, I just couldn't cope with the colour!

On a BMW? 80k seems to be a more realistic life expectancy for most of their cooling systems at least as far back as E30/32/34. 100k without replacing any of it and you're doing bloody well.

Hoses are simple enough to keep an eye on if the car's in regular use and you're under the bonnet regularly anyway. If you're replacing the pump, thermostat, VC, fan and radiator anyway, I agree it seems practical to change the even more readily perishable rubber bits.

Hoses seem to be less problematic IME than the (usually plastic) connections on the radiators that often crack first.
Cheers. The rad and ex.tank are seeping slightly from the joins so they definitely need to go, the whole lot appears original with the car on 100k. I ordered the 2 hoses which go from the engine - 80 quid (!!). I think the car is a keeper, the previous owner had it since the dawn of time, it has an alusil block and the gearbox was rebuilt a few years ago. Lovely old boat to roll around in.

It's funny that's what I like the most about the car. That does look lovely - as a daily driver and only car I'd be happy with the six cylinder as well. What a nice looking car for very little money.

A quick question for e38 beards - is the lower 10% of the body normally black (ie at the bottom of the doors?)? I can't remember seeing this before. Probably just me though.

Sport models and facelifted 740/750i/iL had full colour coding as standard, the rest had black sills, lower front bumper and rear valance as shown, but full colour coding could be specified from the factory.

It's just not so noticeable on the more common dark hues:

Question fully answered by the experts as expected! I don't think I have seen one in that colour and spec before, so the dark sills stood out. I rather like them though. It must be unusual to have this engine with an individual interior?

Could this be fine if I put it into my mechanic, or is it really worth 6p (the current bid)?

Or someone who has just done that damn ice bucket challenge... On reflection BMWs with engine related worries should not be on my list no matter how cheap!
