It's kind of par for the course with me. Spend a fortune that I'll never see back, get bored of the car and sell it so somebody else gets the benefit.
Glad to know it's not just me then! silly
On behalf of Next Guys everywhere, thanks chaps.

Got the '55 back this morning. £1894 lighter. It feels.....

.....Largely the same.

List of work and parts goes onto 2 pages.... Nice addition to the history file (I do like a nice A4 folder of history).
Ouch. What was some of the stuff done?

Annual service on my C43 always ends up being 4 figures. There is always something to do and little bits add up fast!

He listed the main issues a few pages back:

"Expensive appears to be the word of the day.

"One front wish bone - bushes are shot, replacement advised for the pair. £177 each!
"Exhaust clamp
"forward lower, rear subframe bushes are beginning to go. 5 hours labour!
"fuel leak
"Oil leak
"Discs on the front a below spec, (small lip which I thought was fine but apparently not!)
"Pads non Merc part and causing the clonk i'm getting when I reverse and stop
"Front tyres are low, caused by the wish bones - knew about this"

You poor sod. I have the misfortune to live in Grimsby; it's an utterly horrid, depressing and hateful place.

Dad had a contract in Grimsby. Pretty much put him off working so retired.

Funny that, as most people here don't seem to work. That's possibly what gave your dad the idea.

This is how i make my living: nobody else is willing to go. Anyway, I like Grimsby.

S8 has gone. Sniff... Really going to miss the big old lump. Washed and polished it yesterday (a rare treat), advert went up yesterday afternoon and a very nice chap has just left a deposit on it.

Sat looking out the window with a serious case of sellers remorse but I don't really drive anymore and it wasn't liking being sat on the driveway not being used, barges need to be run.

Sigh....

To be fair though, what else can you do? I could probably have saved a vast amount doing it myself but it all needed doing so I was faced with bin the car off after just 3 weeks knowing it needed a load of work and loose money that way or bite the bullet and keep it.
The answer is never take an old car to a dealer and say "tell me what is wrong with it!".

smile

If you were happy with it before, then if you'd never known, you'd still be happy with it. Every rear wheel Merc needs new front rear suspension bushes - it is a standard feature!

Ooh, that makes me want to start a dealer-bashing 'you're all crooks thread'.

Have I got it right? nuts

I ordered the replacement for the W126 and A8 today, but I went a bit over thread budget and it's only a 1.5 litre so I can't really post it here. wink

Probably!

The problem is, if you're asking a dealer to basically say what isn't perfect and is a bit worn....then if they are diligent that will always be a long list on an old car!

25 years ago I went to medical school having first trained as a dentist. Being newly married and having to pay to go to medical school as well as keeping some "body and soul" together I was willing to travel anywhere to get work and earn a few quid. Thus, I did a few hospital locums in Shorpe and Grimsby (amongst many other places).

Now that was a long time ago and things may have possibly changed but Shorpe (followed by Grimsby) was quite easily the worst place I ever locumed.

It was so bad that on the nights when I wasn't on-call I'd get back in our only working car at the time (a 1.1 Peugeot 205) and drive all the way back to our council flat at the Elephant & Castle then drive back all the way the next morning rather than stay there.

P.S Interesting the way even PH censors Shorpe!

I'd love to, but the XJS developed a misfire tonight, so I'm sitting in the dark having hot-shivers about the prospect of spending upwards of £30 on plugs/leads/whatever...

This is supposed to happen to the Last Guy, or the Next Guy. Not the This Guy.

Woe.
