It doesn't get criticised by everyone - I loved mine.
Mine was good for a while. Downpipes needed changing, airbag lights needed sorting but other than that all smooth until the dreaded sportronic ecu locked the gearbox. No end of problems then. I was after the magic of my previously owned 164 Cloverleaf but the 166 3.0 was inferior in many ways. Got rid and bought a manual 156 24v. Much better and, though this now resides in the garage I won't get rid of it because a) it's worth nothing and b) I will get it back on the road one day. I love the look of the 164, but there just don't seem to be any around any more. I can't remember the last time I saw one What's wrong with the 156?

MOT ran out, bought a Suzuki Swift Sport which the wife drives mostly, needs sills sorting for MOT. I did top and bottom wishbone and discs and pads last year so probably not a lot wrong with it. What's wrong with the 156?
Last cambelt change was at 90k, now on 107k but time served so I'd probably want to do that and some body work too. Interior is v very good though.

Even at a fixed price of £5.5k I could be tempted too!

Well I've been in contact with both CharlesDeGaulle and R129sl and have exchanged contact numbers so think we're going to meet up, if you wanted we could always meet up at a local petrol station or something and turn up in barge convoy.
Convoy sounds like fun, I'll be in touch once I'm back from holiday. Will be splendid to see a barge on display!

Gotta be a nice one this, a tonne of maintenance done.

fk it. Think I've got a cracked spring on OSF.
Don't notice it at all normal driving but slow speed bumps there's a slight creaking type noise. Car also seems to be sitting 1-2cm lower that side.
Likely a spring? Booked in next Friday and hopefully not too expensive.
Obviously, get the shock done same time.... Worth doing both sides? Probably. Ouch

Makes sense to do both sides surely? Actually, doing all four corners makes sense...Don't notice it at all normal driving but slow speed bumps there's a slight creaking type noise. Car also seems to be sitting 1-2cm lower that side.

I thought the vendor had changed his mind and decided to keep it? Looks nice, like the colour and as you say, plenty of recent work done. Good value i.m.o. but the market disagrees.http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/classifieds-cars-sa...

I'd get both front springs done at the same time, if 1 has gone the other may not be far behind. I wouldn't do shocks as a matter of course though, only if they need doing. Shouldn't be an awful job or too expensive? Don't notice it at all normal driving but slow speed bumps there's a slight creaking type noise. Car also seems to be sitting 1-2cm lower that side.

For those who are interested the 54 plate V12 S600 Bi-Turbo with 48k ended for just over £6k......

When I've had cracked springs, there's been a dramatic loss of height, with the tyre just missing the wheelarch. I suppose it depends on how it breaks, but as said before, better get it checked as last time it happened the recovery crew were very keen to check under the car in case it tore the tyre as they manoeuvred it onto the recovery truck. Could the creaking be a ball joint or steering arm perhaps?Don't notice it at all normal driving but slow speed bumps there's a slight creaking type noise. At least 1 suspension arm needs doing as there is a judder from high speed braking - I'm not sure what suspension parts can cause creaking on slow speed bumps?
I'm not joking when I say I can't notice it AT ALL when driving normally; be it around town or on the motorway. It's just like coming off dropped kerbs etc really.....
Any other thoughts?
I don't need the car THAT much in the next week. It's booked in on Friday but due to work hours I'll be taking it to them on the Wednesday, I won't need the car sunday-Tuesday anyway so I reckon it'll get looked at in around 100 miles of driving, maybe 150 absolute most.
If it's a spring, I'll get both front shocks and springs doing....and if the suspension arms need doing I'll see if they can do that as well.
Just need to make sure I get it back for Mercedes-Benz World now
Well, I should be able to collect it on the Saturday anyway. They said they'll order in the springs/shocks and if it isn't that, they'll send them back so at least IF it's that then it'll definitely be sorted for MB world.
Whilst it's out....Is there anything that will be significantly easier to change that'll be worth doing, like bushes etc? Might as well make a job of it and give the front end a good overhaul I guess....
edit - regards ride height, I can get 3-4 fingers width between the tyre and the arch on the NSF, yet the OSF is nearer 2-3 fingers width, so not a huge difference but it's definitely noticeable. Could just be a tired shock? Had it on the E38 before I had them replaced.
