With a little bit of tlc that Alpina B10 would be a very nice thing - and a nice left-field barge too.

The tlc might however quickly make it seem expensive and outside thread budget.
Pricey for the mileage and no interior shots worry me - Could be cracking though... Would love one of these!

Too much gassing and not enough barges being posted chaps....

Strong money, but not many left with this sort of mileage.

BMW 5 SERIES 535i Sport 4dr Auto 3.5
39700 miles

That's ridiculous VFM at £3-3.5k. Great find, as usual Edo.
Ta. I may get me a barge after the 6 series goes back end of August, just a bit early for me presently!
Seller just sent me this:

Looks great, somebody here should give it a good home. I'd be making a beeline for it myself if I weren't already suitably barged up.
Well, my friend is just on his why back from Southampton having just bought the above car.

Now, the following has to be taken in the context of someone who is never satisfied with ANY car and finds fault in all...even his brand new Mercedes C63 with 112 miles on it when delivered. To the extent that he phoned me immediately to tell me how awful the condition was (a tiny literally hairline scratch on the driver's kick plate paint) that he told his girl-friend to "park it 'round the back of the house because I can't bear to look at it!"):

I haven't seen it yet but apparently it's not as good as it was advertised as. As I said, I haven't seen it yet but this is what my friend has said so far when he phoned me whilst driving back:

1) Intermittent Front-end shimmy (especially when braking)

2) Marks on bodywork which will require paintshop attention. Seller's excuse "Oh, they were already on it when he bought it so not his fault" (or words to that effect apparently. irked

3) Pixels out on the display

4) Wheels need refurbishing

5) Black leather on driver's bolster marked (I'm sure that'll be nothing!)

I'll probably get to see and drive it tomorrow.
Going back quite a few pages and on the subject of epic drives...

We may remember that my friend bought the above car some weeks ago?

Well, after a bit of fettling to include brand new Dunlops tyres all round (to replace the badly cracked ones on the car), overhauling the front brake calipers (to eliminate the massive wobble and pulling to the left), a full service and me diagnosing and replacing a faulty cam sensor on Friday, he and another friend of his have just taken it for a little run just to make sure everything is now running sweetly....which it seems it is!

Whitchurch, Shropshire to Torremolinos, Andalucia...1579 miles...in one go, non-stop! (26 hours...including Ferry rather than Tunnel...so for mph do the maths! wink )

Letting fate decide what I do next in part. Put it out there with a bit of a cheeky asking and if it goes for a good return, that'll go toward something else...
Well that made the decision, sold to the first to come and see her yesterday evening, for a fair return. So it's back to the classifieds. hehe

Hello everyone, long time watcher of this thread but 1st time poster.

Its time for someone else to enjoy my lovely car, but I'm struggling to get a good idea of it's value.

Its a well looked after 2003 XJ6 (X350) with 47k and FJSH - there aren't many similar examples on the market it seems, mainly cars with much higher mileages. It is BRG with sand leather & walnut interior if that makes any difference. The chap at the MoT station was really admiring it but even he couldn't give a decent estimate on what it was worth.

Any ideas?
The values seem to depend on the options it has, as well as servicing, mileage etc. If it's got nav, xenons, the alpine stereo and rear entertainment system I'd say £6k, maybe even a little more if it's got decent wheels spec'd.

I've seen pre facelift X350s go for as low as £3k and as much as £12k - I paid £4.5k for mine around a year and a half ago with much higher mileage, but with a desirable colour combo and options, and I've been offered more than what I paid several times since.
Tell us more about it; is it an SE, Sport, Sovereign? A few pics would be good too wink

Looking at getting back into a big barge - how much of a world of bork am I looking at with an A8 4.2?
Wheels look like they need a refurb which if they are diamond cut won't be cheap, but it does look like a lovely place to steer from

Advert reads nice, laquer peel appears to be limited to the bonnet from the photos - any idea how easy/costly that would be to sort? something about it looks nice though (to me)

I keep coming back to this.

So I googled the registration mark. And found this: http://www.ukvehicle.com/J331OPK/ This is a new site to me but isn't that interesting: not much of a margin in it but a turn all the same. Why do I find this off putting?

Marvellous! Part of me does regret passing on my E39.

Did he ever get the pixels fixed? If not, and you're near Southampton again, Rudi Kapka should be able to sort you out. His day job means he cannot always do it but he fixed my cluster twice for a very reasonable price. Once for the pixels and later when the bulbs went. No matter how hard I tried I could never get the cluster out to attempt myself!

Tax to July 2015?

I thought it was no longer transferable after Oct 1?

I 'think' if it was bought before the switch away from a paper disc (we renewed the tax on my wife's new S5 from the beginning of September and got a paper disc) that it still carries over under the old system.

Only, I understand, if you bought the tax. As of the 1st, you can bin the disc, they are no longer relevant.

If ownership changes, the new rules apply.

So if it sells before 1 Oct, buyer keeps the benefit of tax to July.

If it sells after 1 Oct, he doesn't. Seller gets refund, buyers taxes afresh.

Simples!

You're quite right - went off to read up on it after posting. Still failing to understand how they can't pro-rata the refund to previous keeper based on a daily cost, rather than whole unused months! Surely in the absence of a paper disc to return and a date from which ownership transferred it's not beyond them to calculate accordingly? Unless they just wanted to pocket the cash, of course....

It's better than that - if you buy a car in the middle of the month, you pay for the full month, the seller doesn't get a refund, so the DVLA get paid twice for that month.

Can't think why they find that attractive.

From a buyer's perspective, it's no different from the current system,.

From a seller's perspective, if you were in the minority who were in the habit of cashing in their tax on sale then, again, it's no different. If you weren't previously in the habit of cashing in tax, you now get a few months' (or whatever) cash back automatically once the DVLA receives your V5. Bonus!

I don't really see where the perceived great swindle is taking place. It's a good hypothetical moan, but the cash amounts involved are negligible in the grand scheme of things.

Provided the 24/7 call centre and website all works as intended, I think it's a good scheme.

It is pretty much how the current system operates, to be fair.

Except it removes the choice, meaning any car sold outside of month end will result in an extra month of VED being paid.

In addition, you'll no longer be able to pick up an essentially free snotter, that holy grail of bangernomics, a 2-300 quid motor with best part of a year's tax and mot.

With the new infrastructure there's no real reason the system couldn't operate akin to insurance and MOT, becoming due on a particular day.

The margin might be even less than it initially appears given that it would seem that he's had to tax and MOT it since that last sale in June?

It should be based on a per-day taxing scheme - they're trumpeting how it's now mandatory to declare SORN immediately etc etc, moving us all to have a national database of tax/MOT/insurance etc, but there's still a monthly system in there? Silly imo.

Agreed. Indeed, at this very moment I'm trying to find a £500 runabout within 10miles of home with a year's ticket, tax into the new year and insurable on a classic policy to run through til the spring.

Having to tax my bangers of the future will be a drag.
