You'd think that with a budget of thread maximum plus 3 I'd be able to find something practical AND interesting.

All I want is an estate or saloon with folding rear seats within a couple of hours of Cardiff. Can't find a thing I like.
Everything on Autotrader is within 2 hours of Cardiff if you travel there by plane smile
I'm getting desperate enough to do this now. Shame Cardiff airport is not exactly well served by flights.

Got our E46 320D Terracleaned on Wednesday. The car is noticeably smoother at idle and throughout the rev range, particularly when cold. Seems to be more free-revving too.
Haven't done enough miles to gauge economy, but the seemingly reduced inertia should bring a bit of a benefit. Overall, it seems to be a good procedure, with the tbc economy benefits probably determining how worthwhile it is to most, but I'm happy enough.

Got my s124 back from the indy yesterday- my mystery leak was from the gearbox. Interestingly, it was coming through the gearbox overload switch, which my guy had never seen before. £60 replacement switch from MB and all is well. Got the V-belt changed too to remove an annoying squeal, and everything is silky smooth again.

Still haven't sorted out the imbalance at 80ish though....

You're in a potential world of pain still with over-priced tat and boring as sin rep-mobiles long since past their best with soul destroying turgid engines frown

Folding seats in a saloon must limit the search a bit? Guess it varies by manufacturer more than model?

Buy something French - at least it will amuse the masses biggrin

After a quick look (and based on 100 miles from my folks in Somerset):

or creeping into thread budget, just:

Cheers, I do like the E60 (and E61) but getting a saloon with folding rear seats is a real pain in the rectum.
If non-diesel-turgidity is required, at that budget you're approaching post-06 £500 tax territory, which I'd avoid like the plague, but you have a choice of Legacy/Outback (3.0 is nice), or even a Tribeca - quite a barge experience but you'd need to love Citroen-style depreciation, V70 T6 (yum), maybe a 300C estate (yee-har) if you can find one. Or de-run-flat'd BMWs.

Then get the estate... wink Granted its 150 miles away in Portsmouth. Funnily enough I'm doing the opposite journey tomorrow and passing Cardiff on the way to Swansea.

Question to the denizens of this fine thread. What would you say is the fastest proper car within thread budget. By proper, I mean, not a Toyota Supra. And by fastest, I mean, in the real world, not on the track/0-60. I suspect it is something like a 545i, maybe a S600 biturbo, but none of those hits the spot, they're a bit too big and lardy.

I think you answered your own question Jonathan, but if that doesn't float your boat, it takes something very fast indeed to keep up with a hard charging XJR or S Type R on fresh suspension and brakes.

The other that springs to mind is an E39 M5 which sometimes come into thread budget, however I think you would get a better S-Type R at this price point.

Hasn't the odd C32 come into thread budget, those are pretty quick

Alpina B10 V8?

One Autotrader right now at £4995 but I dare not post pictures due to the interior at this time of the morning.... The brave can take a look.

Not much big capacity forced induction for 1-5k other than what's listed already. Nothing's going to come close to the 600 biturbo for torque, the M5 is a contender but one in thread budget isn't likely to be great. Nothing the R129sl "rectification" process couldn't sort out though over time.

So you're asking what barge that isn't a barge is the quickest barge available for £1-5k?

E36 M3.

Plus, what were £4.5-5k E39 M5s are now £6.5-7k E39 M5s, such have their values risen overall.

The Subarus, Volvo and Chrysler do very little for me though. I'm a fussy swine.

Basically I want a E91 330i manual within a couple of hours of me. I've just missed out on 2 and am royally peed off with my luck as I couldn't get to them before they went.

Firstly you say you want a saloon OR estate with folding rear seats; then you say finding a saloon with folding rear seats is difficult....as if the estate is no longer an option? If it's so hard to find a saloon, and you don't mind getting an estate, why not save yourself a lot of hassle and just get an estate?
