Question to the denizens of this fine thread. What would you say is the fastest proper car within thread budget. By proper, I mean, not a Toyota Supra. And by fastest, I mean, in the real world, not on the track/0-60. I suspect it is something like a 545i, maybe a S600 biturbo, but none of those hits the spot, they're a bit too big and lardy.
So you're asking what barge that isn't a barge is the quickest barge available for £1-5k?

E36 M3.
In a similar vein the C32 AMG must be in with a shout.

How is yours going bud?

Got an aircon light fault on mine now! Thinking it's just a re-gas (I hope!) as it was sounding wheezy before.

Part service history though. Maybe I'm being unrelaistic but I'd like FSH at these prices. Enjpoy Swansea, it's a strange City...

The Subarus, Volvo and Chrysler do very little for me though. I'm a fussy swine.

Basically I want a E91 330i manual within a couple of hours of me. I've just missed out on 2 and am royally peed off with my luck as I couldn't get to them before they went.
So you mean like this one in Birmingham? Or do you not like blue.... winkbiggrin

£1500 for a sub 50k mile 728i has got to be a deal for something to smoke about in?

Alternatively, spending a significant percentage of your vehicle's value every year to use it.

£500pa to tax a £10k+ vehicle I don't really onject to in principle. But when you're sub £5k it's a bit rich, relatively speaking.

>sticks to pre-23rd March 2006 bargain barges<
Yeh -have to agree. Also with pre march 2006 its as if the Govt says "Here mate have £200 on us!"
Wonder how close prices are with pre and post march?

Touch wood but so far so good. On the aircon side of things it had a new aircon condenser last year and a Febi aircon receiver/dryer came with the car. Still blowing nice and cold at the moment.

Going to get underneath it over the next week or so and underseal it, used POR15 on my Integra last weekend and that was pretty easy to apply (on me as well as the car wink) so plan on using that.

I'd also like to remove the secondary CATS, doesn't seem too obtrusive yet releases a bit more of that v8 growl.

How you getting on? I seen you had a hefty bill, should hopefully be good for a while now.

It should stick, else you're getting into retrospective taxing, just as the pre/post 1 Mar 2001 set-up.

I just applied some of their marine spec rust treatment for a few small patches on mine. 2 coats and over the top with silver hammerite. You'd never know the difference!

How much is the cat removal? I'd be tempted if it wasnt expensive.

Other than the big bill its been fine - touch wood. Drives a million times nicer since the new wishbones. Going to have a crack at my milky headlights over the weekend. Have a micromesh kit.

Plus, what were £4.5-5k E39 M5s are now £6.5-7k E39 M5s, such have their values risen overall.
I think that is probably the best answer. That or an E55 AMG. It's quite nice to have something with a bit of shove, isn't it?

The 2001 variation is a clearer distinction yes, as it was the transition from simple displacement based taxation to the CO2 system, previously new vehicles hadn't had that figure recorded/homologated so couldn't be used as it has been since.

The 23rd March 2006 change was instigated as otherwise people who had bought vehicles with outputs in excess of 225g/km would now be paying a rate of tax deemed unfair retrospectively as they made their buying decision upon the scheme in place at that time. Only owners continuing to make similar decisions from that point on could choose to - or not to - pay £400 for the top band (then, now it's £500).

Hence why my E60 M5 will be an 05/55 or first three weeks of 06 plate - for an occasionally used vehicle, £285pa is more tolerable than £500(+, as it will surely become). It's enough to have rendered all Z4 Ms out of consideration for me, as appealing as they are, enjoyment and investment-wise.

Of course the amounts themselves within those bands can be subject to ongoing review and change (usually adding £5-10 per budget), but I'd expect the distinction to remain, just as the 1972 one has held, instead of becoming a rolling 25 year exemption.

Cheers, I do like the E60 (and E61) but getting a saloon with folding rear seats is a real pain in the rectum.
Firstly you say you want a saloon OR estate with folding rear seats; then you say finding a saloon with folding rear seats is difficult....as if the estate is no longer an option? If it's so hard to find a saloon, and you don't mind getting an estate, why not save yourself a lot of hassle and just get an estate?
Because it's hard to get an estate OR a saloon with folding seats.

That's one of the two that I've missed out on. Looked lovely, though the cream leather was a bit pimp.

Yep! biggrin

I find ~350 lb ft a useful starting point. hehe

V8 XJRs also deserve a look in - big yes, but seem to weigh less than their size would have you believe, whether steel or ally bodied.

That isn't right, surely? Most estates have folding seats, that's the point of them.

It's a couple of tanks of petrol, irrelevant in the overall ownership cost.

Depends on the rpm, no? 350lb ft in a diesel revv9ng to 4500rpm isn't much.... Imagine it in a high revving engine though.... wink

That's where I bought the POR15 from, this to be precise...http://www.frost.co.uk/automotive-car-bike-maintenance/automotive-rust-products/por15-rust-prevention-paint-473ml.html

If you have a decent local Stainless Exhaust outfit then I expect around £200. Then the decision of whether to go with an X pipe or H pipe to replace it wink from what I've read the X pipe is the way to go.

Good luck with the lights, mine came up nice and "fresh" with some toothpaste.

350lb ft of effort is the same amount of shove, howsoever derived. Preferably via the medium of large displacement, multicylindered petrol engine, but it's acceptable enough in a grunty diesel too. 535d/M5 V10/V12 Seven, all very different, but all deliver *sufficient* shove in their characteristic ways - all agreeable.
