Depends on the rpm, no? 350lb ft in a diesel revv9ng to 4500rpm isn't much.... Imagine it in a high revving engine though.... wink
Power = torque x revs, it is a simple arithemtical relationship. So If you change the RPM figure at which you consider a given torque figure, you are not considering torque, you are considering power.

I'd expect the distinction to remain, just as the 1972 one has held, instead of becoming a rolling 25 year exemption.
Well, actually the 1972 exemption is no more, as it has become a rolling 40 year exemption and is currently anything pre 1 January 1974, moving next year to pre 1 January 1975.

I agree that the 2006 one will hold simply because there's no worthwhile policy reason to change it. The cars are disappearing off the roads at a rate of knots and it would just cause a pointless political hoo-hah for a small and rapidly diminishing tax yield.

That would have made more sense if you'd left the torque figure identical and used different power figures to illustrate your point.

Yes I'm acquainted with how power is derived mathematically as an expression of an amount of work done over time. The actual force/work done being torque.

Torque = the amount of force.
Power = the rate at which said force can be deployed.

350 lb ft is 350 lb ft. Just as 350kg is 350kg. The variable is the rate, which is indeed when the power figure comes into it.

When you have 350 lb ft in a regular car engine, of whatever type - it will have different power figures associated with different engine types of course - but they'll all be fairly useful.

All things wouldn't be equal though, the gear and final drive ratios would be chosen to suit accordingly.

TL;DR: Pretty much all the cars I most like have a nominal torque output in excess of/around 350 lb ft, with power figures anywhere from 300-500bhp. They are all appealing, despite their very different delivery and performance stats (which, top speed aside are largely irrelevant to me in real driving).

£7,999BMW 3 SERIES 330i M Sport 5dr 3.0 Manual FULL SERVICE HISTORY / SAT NAV

That's one of the two that I've missed out on. Looked lovely, though the cream leather was a bit pimp.
That's similar to mine - E91 Lemans, no leather - alcantara/cloth, which I prefer, pana roof and autobox. Sport ride is appalling on runflats - hard, tramlines, nervous - and that's after geo was done, but I have Falkens waiting to go on which should improve things. Pre 2007ish is the old N52 engine (later N53 eco high pressure jobbie eats fuel pumps afaik) - N52 is lovveeeelly, a proper petrol engine. Not sure post '56 plates are much more to tax on these either.

Touch wood but so far so good. On the aircon side of things it had a new aircon condenser last year and a Febi aircon receiver/dryer came with the car. Still blowing nice and cold at the moment.

Going to get underneath it over the next week or so and underseal it, used POR15 on my Integra last weekend and that was pretty easy to apply (on me as well as the car wink) so plan on using that.

I'd also like to remove the secondary CATS, doesn't seem too obtrusive yet releases a bit more of that v8 growl.

How you getting on? I seen you had a hefty bill, should hopefully be good for a while now.
Speaking of winter treatment, I was intending in doing the XJ's underside (so much as I can reach). I was planning on using ACF-50, is there an easier product to use? New tyres due on a week's time (£90 a corner for premiums, god bless Jaguar and the 16" wheel). The paperwork came in the post today too.

Still hugely enjoying this fantastic car, Chris. It is a joyous thing. Unfortunately not everyone thinks so; earlier on I had a drongo in a people carrier (why are they always so badly driven?) trying to cut me up on a dual carriageway, really making an effort to drive like an idiot. All that effort and aggression, only to come off two exits and three miles down the road. Bizarre! Sadly I feared he was desperate to take a wing off my car with his 'decisive' lane changing.

big barge for £2495?? ok so 260,000 miles, but that interior looks to have worn a lot better than others i've seen - how long do you think is left before bork makes this a rather large garden ornament?

Yes. A 330d makes more torque than a 335i, yet one is a fair chunk quicker and it isn't the one with more torque.

With 8 and 9 speed gearboxes it's become slightly less relevant in terms of actual performance numbers, but there is something very pleasing about how big low rpm torque delivers performance.

Glad to hear your really enjoying it, it's a lovely machine! Regards rust protection I've heard ACF-50 is good stuff however I've never used it so can't comment on how easy it is to apply compared with POR15. When I researched the various products I narrowed it down to two, POR15 and Dintrol. Went for POR15 in the end and have to say it was very, very easy to apply. I jacked the car up with a trolley jack and had two Axle stands so could get under the car. Be great getting it up on a lift to do it but that wasn't an option. If you do use POR15 make sure you're well covered up. I turned up for work on Monday looking like I had a side line working as a painter! smile its bl**dy hard stuff to remove!

Re the people carrier lots of frustrated\angry dad's driving them! (Incidentally, despite having a Ford Galaxy I'm not in that camp! wink)

Well, insomuch as the same car with a 9 speed box will potentially post quicker numbers than the same with a 5 speed box because with the extra intermediate gears it can be nearer peak power more of the time.

As soon as you express it in terms of "at rpm", you're talking rate. Which is indeed power and there's a way of expressing it in appropriate units.

350kg is 350kg, whatever speed it's travelling at. The amount of momentum the combination of mass and velocity will vary, but the mass itself is unaltered. It'll hurt more when it drops on your head at 50mph than 5mph, but it's no more or less mass either way.

In terms of road car engines, 350lb ft whether it peaks anywhere in the usual range of 2-5k rpm is a nice amount of poke, I find. That's my general point.

Jeez, (flawed) engineering dissertation from a glib comment, you know you're on PH. hehe

If it pleases your sense of pedantry though: "350lb ft of torque when it occurs as the peak crank output in the typical rev ranges of road car engines in standard form is - I find - a satisfying amount of motive effort to have at one's diposal, however much instantaneous and peak power it may relate to as a result of the overall configuration and design of engine and appended to various types of transmissions in various types and weights of vehicles"

The insurance co are taking my written off Saab soon so time is of the essence.

Should have made myself clearer earlier. I'm looking for an estate or a saloon. The saloon must have folding seats. I'm struggling to find either an estate or saloon that fits my needs.

I think some people hereabouts object to other people selling barges for profit.

Of course it's fine when *we* do it. hehe

The miles would scare me a bit, but they are a lovely thing to waft about in. Also quite nimble for such a big lump.
