A sports car it might not be but it does have a lot of power through the rears and it weighs a lot so it'll get through tyres quite quickly.

Interesting about the uniroyals. I'm probably going to go with Goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric 2 again, all round.
I found CSC5s wore really quickly on our A5 bus with a lot of town driving - scrubbed badly. For the money saved if I'd replaced them again I'd have gone back to Michelin PS3 as they wore much more evenly.

I was quite impressed by Dunlop Sport Maxx when we test drove an S5 Sportback - as quiet as the Michelin or Conti options but they are a fair bit cheaper.

Going Super Sports on the next set for the S5 but they are £270 each.....

My old man has Pilot Supersports on the M6 and had them on the M3 (after the PS2s) and they were absolutely mega. Whether it's the car or whether it's the tyre I'm no sure, but the M6 does have more road noise than the E65 does.

The Supersports also last a fair chunk longer than the PS2s I believe.

Ross, as it will be coming into winter have you contemplated using proper winter tyres?
The difference they make, even in the rain is astonishing.
If it snows (Southampton has known snow, albeit rarely wink), with them on you will actually have a BMW that is driveable in the white stuff!

They are good enough now that you can run them through the spring too.

I fitted a set for the first time in 2010 and from that point on I was a convert and have used them on a BMW so I know the difference they make.

I'm considering getting some winters for my Jaguar as I was going to order some tyres this week. Since I bought the Jag with the intention of using it for transport over winter when it's not suitable to use my motorbike, some winter tyres might be a good idea. Frankly, I may end up just using them all year round depending on how they last.

I agree! I only tried winter tyres for the first time a couple of winters back and was really surprised by the difference they made.

Which reminds me, despite our recent good autumn weather, I mustn't forget to put them on the E38 soon.

What are the best conditions to store the other wheels and tyres under of the winter?

I've never actually had a car long enough to wear a set of tyres from new to bald. Had Falken 453's on my 530. were great!

Im in a similar situation to you Ross. My fronts have bald outer edges but the rears have about 4-5mm.

Quick question for you guys. The ESP seems to be kicking in WAAYYYYY too early on the CLK and at odd occasions. Under acceleration its fine. Kicks in and just holds back on power, exactly as I expect and its predictable, you can drive round it. However when slowing down and entering roundabouts its awful. At almost any speed above crawling I get a quick flash of the ESP and can feel the rear brakes grab.

On the M25 in the fog/damp with the cruise @ 80 twice in my 2 hours journey the ESP cut in and kicked out the cruise.

Only things i've had done to the car are, New disks up front and new wishbones up front - incl full 4 wheel alignment. I know the lower, forward, rear subframe bushes are a bit worn but the mechanic said that they'd last till my next service.

Could it be a speed sensor? ABS ring? Its not under braking, only engine braking and seems to be around the downshift on the box. The box is fine though and perfectly smooth.
Sounds like a misbehaving ABS sensor.

Inflate to max pressure and keep out of direct sunlight!

I've got winters coming for the S5 in an 8.5x18 - will be our first experience of running them but hoping the tyre life overall will be improved by running the right tyres for the temperature!

Hadn't read that about pressures, but defo in the dark (plan to put ours in the loft of the house if I can get them up there, or roof of the garage) and not stacked either, preferably

89k and £4k. That seems absurd value for money. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...

Given the location of the dealer that looks almost too cheap.

Hmm combined with the sign in the screen you may be right. Though the price matches their website?

Perhaps a trade in?!

That's about 2 miles from me. I know the garage well - good guys and I've bought a couple of cars from them (although probably not for almost 10 years now). And a good pal just bought a Boxster from them.

Ran Falken ZE-914s on my 5 Touring. Used to get 30-35K out of the tyres according to my invoices when I checked the other month.
What size engine was that, and was that for the fronts?

Genuinely reckon the current falkens on there would get that if the outer edges hadn't worn. As said, after about 20k they've got shed loads left!
3.0 petrol front and rears. Generally I did all four when they needed doing as they tended to wear within a few thousand of each other. For the sake of 5000 miles (2.5 months) extra usage I'd just swap them all.

Mind you my commute was/is motorway and dual carriage way so not like the car got thrown around.

I always rated the Falkens on the e65, decent levels of grip in dry and wet and pretty hard wearing.

Re winters, ran a set in my v70 for years, totally transform the car! I actually ran them all year, only disadvantage is they wear a good bit quicker and can increase road noise.

That's a corker!

If it's rust-free and got good history, that would be in my crosshairs.

No mention of the hard-top, though.

Prices always vary between suppliers but once you've identified the right part it's usually easy to find a cheap supplier. Merc get their shocks from Sachs; I'd fit those or Bilstein depending on who is cheapest. Euro Car Parts are pretty reasonable at the moment but often you can do better. Do you have the chassis number? If so, I can find the parts for you pretty quickly. Shocks are an easy DIY; springs less so.

I think the front shocks are Sachs 200 047 and the rears are Sachs 200 048. Cheapest fronts I can find are here at £81 each (I have used this inauspicious-looking supplier and he was fine) http://www.wanapart.co.uk/shock-absorber/suspensio... and the cheapest rears are at the same place at £42 each http://www.wanapart.co.uk/shock-absorber/suspensio... but I haven't checked the part nos against your chassis no.

Spotted this tidy looking green S500 on Ebay. However, given prices for these things, it almost seems to expensive. Nice to see an unusual colour.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-Benz-S-500-1998...

And a rather stunning w124 300D, especially if you like blue.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/W124-MERCEDES-300D-AUTO-...

I absolutely love that E300D.

However, a bit put off that all of his ebay history shows him buying spray painting stuff. I'd wager that he's sprayed it himself. The photos look good, but then again so do the pictures of my house on Rightmove (and I painted that!)
