Hello all.

Long time lurker sometime poster here........ The have been offered a W220 S500 my2000 120k miles

Like most s500's it's a decent spec, nav, Electric seats front and rear.

I have a W220 320CDI so I'm aware of their shortcomings.

The question is, what should I be paying? Is there even a market for these any more?

Cheers

It's an early one so somewhere around £2k depending on MOT, Tax, service history, state of consumables such as tyres and brakes?

Here's a 2000MY with sub 100k and 12 months MOT for £1800;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-s-class-500-/11...

Lot of car for the money but I think many would prefer the S320 CDI you already have!

I like the wrongly identified Mercedes w108 280 SE 3.5 (they have it as a 280E). Potential bargain headache/driveway ornament/cast-ron ground for divorce there. Early r129 500 SL looks ok, though if the best they can say about it is that it was driven 100 miles to the auction, I'm not so sure! The SL60 AMG is out of thread budget but looks under-valued to me.

As little as you can. Maybe £2,000 if it's a good un. That is not to denigrate the car: these offer astonishing value for money but nobody wants ten-year old big petrol any more.

Thanks for the info guys.

If I do go for it I won't be getting attached to it. If it breaks, it goes.

Worst case, what it worth to a breaker? Or more to the point, what would a breaker pay me?

Scrap value I suspect, so maybe £300?

It does, pity that it's an M20 and not an M50, mind! or a manual. Beggars can't be choosers, I guess.

I think the lack of MOT on the E34 may hurt its value, suspect £1k tops? I will be there so will report back.

I bought a manual E34 525i SE manual on an N plate with long MOT and good history probably 12 months ago for £600, it was lovely and another I probably shouldn't have sold. Can't keep them all is the problem.

Speaking of which - currently high bidder on this; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1992-J-reg-Mercedes-500-...

Seller is Auto Direct of Amersham - Usman Azam.

Thanks again for the help.

If I can get it for the price I think I can I might have to do it.

I'm pushing real man maths here in my head.

Wheels and tyres are something I could shift pretty easy to make some money back in the worst case scenario. Then a few other bits....... Weigh it in after and see what I can get.

This is assuming it's a catastrophic purchase.

Any weak areas on this engine?

I think it's a M113 V8 and fairly reliable, i'm not aware of any particular weak areas but someone more knowledgeable than me may be able to comment.

Good feedback rating, too.

M113 unburstable. In theory the crankshaft damper can disintegrate and take timing case with it but this doesn't seem to happen any more. They weep oil from the left bank rocker cover but it's nothing to worry about. Crankshaft position sensors fail, causing it to stall and refuse to restart when hot. That's it. These are probably the most reliable engines Merc has ever made, better even than the M119. They also make good torque at all speeds, with a big fat plateau from 2,750 to 4,000rpm. Remember they extracted 640bhp and 600lbft from this engine and fed it through the same transmission in the SLR, so it's not exactly stressed in the S500.

A couple of nice 190Es. This low mileage green one is plain but appealing (is it me or are the wheels a bit odd):

We may have had this 2.6 before. Nice, though:

Your car looks great on his website. I've often looked at cars on there, good pics and description - what was the buying experience like?
Fairly hassle-free. Being where I am, I ordered a professional inspection of the car and bought it unseen, then travelled down on the train to Hertford North where Andy Miller (the guy behind Old Colonel) met me with the car and I drove back.

The car was in good condition and well presented.

Ben- congratulations, looks every bit as much as a barge as a C124, and certainly, from the photos, looks like it has escaped rust far better than most C124s. I presume some hefty rust-proofing is required before it faces Aberdeen's winter roads?
It's quite a smooth ride, despite the M-Sport suspension fitted to the Coupes.

No body rust and the underside is pretty good with only superficial corrosion. I have had it waxoyled underneath by the garage doing the other jobs to it. Rustbuster would have been better but another £360 on the bill would have been a bit much given I'd already spent around £910 on parts and labour!
