When I bought my mini I drove it up from Cheltenham to Glasgow, have to admit it was pretty scary passing some HGV's on the M6 with their wheels dwarfing the car. Great little cars though, fantastic fun. Belting round a roundabout in a classic mini is something every petrolhead should experience. However I'd never drive one as a daily now as even the smallest of modern cars dwarf it and well there is the safety aspect.
Am I the only bloke of my age (early 50s) that's never even driven, let alone owned a mini?Been a passenger in a few - including my Ma's that was so old it said "Austin Seven" on the back - wish we still had that. Never saw the appeal.

E38 looks nice. Not toooo sure on the colour, I think Imola suits the E39 better. Looks like a pretty decent price but maybe spec isn't so high - no nav screen for starters.
Completely agree here - the E39 works (just) in this colour - the E38 is too big (and too good looking in other colours!). PlayersNo6 said:

A couple of nice 190Es. This low mileage green one is plain but appealing (is it me or are the wheels a bit odd):

Pretty sure those wheels are correct. An old colleague of mine had them on a 'last of the line' K plate LE back in the day. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MERCEDES-190E-AUTO-54k-m...

It's a car designed in the 50s - hate seems rather strong! Look how 'cute' the one above is! Anyway it's not a barge even by my definition...
e38 728 sport in an interesting colour... £2k with negotiation and "Needs to be seen to be appreciated" http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C536834#
Didn't we have this recently under another seller? I seem to remember it parked up outside a house with another BMW of some sort (possibly an E46 coupe). I recall it being a touch cheaper than that, but my memory isn't what it was...e38 728 sport in an interesting colour... £2k with negotiation and "Needs to be seen to be appreciated" http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C536834#
My mother had a brand new Mini City in about 1980 or 1981. At the same time my dad chopped his Capri 3.0S for a brand new Citröen CX (NVK 530X or W, I think). The good times didn't last much longer but they were cool cars. The mini was red-oranage, I remember that. My mother tells me that she took the Mini back because it would conk out in wet weather. The garagiste asked her, "I suppose you had the lights on?" "Yes." "And the wipers?" "Obviously." "And you'll have had the blower and back window on, too, no doubt?" "Of course, it was awful weather." Apparently he just shook his head, "Well, you can't have them all on at once."
As things went downhill those cars were swapped for a used Passat (ECU 975W) and a Fiat Panda (NTY 310X). Then the Passat went. But it all came good in the end. I can remember the registrations of all the cars from then on. It's bizarre.
I wouldn't much fancy a Mini but they are leagues ahead of the modern Mini. So much utility in so small a space for so little money. The modern one is useless in comparison: all about the show, nothing brilliant about it at all.

The Mk1 MINI was the one that got me - supposedly a good driving car. I borrowed a 'cooper' one of a friend for a weekend and it was poor - the ride was crap, the engine was dire, and it was slow. The 1.3 yaris I left at home was a better all round car (at least the engine had vvti). I was very surprised by this!E65Ross said:
Yes, I was being a bit harsh perhaps....but I really don't like them.
Far too small, cramped, noisy and they have an absurdly small fuel tank, meaning you can't go a decent distance without refuelling.

Don't back down so easily. I am no fan of them either, then again I am 6'6" Far too small, cramped, noisy and they have an absurdly small fuel tank, meaning you can't go a decent distance without refuelling.

As modern transport? fk that. They are still a hoot though they need to be modified into something special. Bucket seats, smaller steering wheel, bigger wheels, sticky tyres, straight through exhaust, throttle bodies, straight cut gears - that makes them a proper little firecracker and outrageously good fun!
My mate who previously ran a V12 XJS now uses a motorbike for day to day use and keeps a sporty Mini for fun.
As a toy a modified mini would be great fun. 50+ years of tuning and modifying minis means there are loads of modified and performance parts available and they're cheap, so it would be viable to build one to your own specification for sensible money, and that appeals to me. Also the sheer agility and small size is something few cars can offer. My mate who previously ran a V12 XJS now uses a motorbike for day to day use and keeps a sporty Mini for fun.

Precautionary maintenance - water pump / belt / stat and housing / expansion tank.
Also new rear shocks and top mounts, front wishbone bushes and new brakes all round, plus rustproofing the underside.
The only work the car really needed was new front brakes, as the disc/s were warped. The rest is just precautionary maintenance to address E36 weaknesses.
Bill was about £910 in total. I sourced most of the parts myself.
If it's a keeper I'll probably get a new rad, hoses and viscous fan coupling and maybe some new front shocks, top mounts and Eibach springs all round....

Except that I tend to get everything sorted and then sell it ....
