Forgive me for being very ignorant but we hear about the BMW tyre issue and prices a lot - what exactly was the issue, and how did it come about? Did BMW just chose weird dimension tyres for a while, or what?!
Not just bmw, didn't jag do the same?

They used metric sizes instead of imperial, but it didn't work out too well in the end hehe

MG did it with the Montego as well, they were an early attempt at run flats only available from one manufacturer at the time, and were around twice the price of normal tyres.

Lots of makers had a go at the millimetric Michelin TRX range at one point or another during the 1980s. (They weren't runflats but there was a similar semi-runflat design called the TDX, but that diud not make it into anything like the same widespread use.) It has a different kind of bead design with the aim of giving low profile handling characteristics with deep profile ride comfort. The rims were made metric rather than imperial diameters to ensure that no-one could fit the wrong type of tyre to an ill-suited bead.

The TRX was fitted at various times to the Mark II Granada and any number of French cars - Peugeot, Citroen, Renault and Alpine. Some Ferraris had them too.

Alfa Sud & Sprint were lumbered with them for a time too.

Wasn't the TRX a bit like Betamax? That is, better than VHS in every measure but not taken up.

Those were the ones MG used.

So, can you actually fit 'regular' tyres to the TRX alloys seen on mid to late 80s 6 and 7 series BMWs?

The XJ40 came with metric TD tyres in 220/65 390 size. They're still available, but really expensive. Jaguar then managed to replace the metric wheels with 15" ones. Typically, being Jaguar, they use an even more obscure 225/65 15 size, which is no longer available at all, except as a van tyre. When my 15" tyres wear out, I'll have to get new wheels. frown

I suppose the fact they're TRXs and in that size come in at £329+VAT each last time I checked a few years ago, probably more now (for the same tyres that were sat in stock then no doubt).

Appealingly original though. FlagshIip BMW from the late '80s - optional radio!

(or no cost delete option, at least)
"Unfortunately I recently got married" made me lol.
I spotted that 750i earlier and had all the same thoughts hehe

It looks absolutely wonderful, and at £1800 it's a stunning prospect. I'm sure it'd fleece me for that much again every year, if not more, but.. just look at it!

In a similar vein, but swapping some measure of the awesomeness for a bit less bork terror, I'm having worrying thoughts about this:

Can you spot the key selling point hiding in the second photo? Looks cracking for £1850.

Memory seats, or the quality original phone handset?!

Can never understand why BMW insisted on fitting that useless trafficmaster box and not allowing you to spec heated seats with it

Looks promising. What would concern me a little is that mine had a autobox rebuild at circa 90k. I have spent out on a cooling refurb (about £600's worth) as most of it looked knackered and its off the road awaiting front suspension work at the minute (centre drag link making a horrible noise when the cars warms up). For the week I've had it running, it was lovely though.

  • Interesting how many P38's that lot sell, would love to see their t&c's...

That looks lovely.... But no, what's this key selling point?

It was indeed the phone I was going for, though it seems I'm a bit unique in this respect hehe there's something about it that screams top-spec exec to me, maybe it's a 90s kid thing. I haven't seen one in an E39 before so it appealed!

The gearbox is the only thing that worries me on that car, I'm not experienced with autos and have seen quite a few E39s with gearbox troubles. Cooling system doesn't worry me any more than on my E36 and E46, I'm used to that!

Seems a hell of a lot of car at the same money I paid for my E46 328i.

It's also got electric steering column adjustment as well, lifts and retracts when you switch ignition off

Oooh, I missed that! I really like those, apart from making egress easier, it's pretty awesome having the steering wheel "served" to you when you key on.

An Infiniti M35h I was in a while back had the same thing, but it also moved the seat right back at the same time so you could get out even easier. Since this car has electric memory seats, it couldn't be too hard to add that too.. scratchchin

You're really not helping me not buy that thing!

My last E39 540 had memory seats and elec. steering adjustment, I can't recall for the life of me whether the seat moved as well. Mine also had double glazing which is very rare on a 5 series.

The actual reason was that in a neat ruse Michelin supplied TRX tyres to BMW and other manufacturers free of charge on the new cars. Amongst the others already mentioned it also included Citroen and Ferrari.

Thus equipped it neatly tied owners at the time into buying their replacement tyres exclusively from Michelin and at a (high) price dictated by Michelin.
