If only they made a V8 E39 with 350-400 horses, an LSD and maybe even a manual 'box for alittl emore control and precision, in the wet - or otherwise.

And I did start off looking at M5s before my head was turned. But having tried 3 M5s over the space of a couple of weeks and then 2 B10s, I genuinely felt the Pina better suited what I needed (new baby and all).

Not complete though, seems that they are basically offering the shell and interior.

How fast / powerful are these, I know bugger all about Alpinas.
"Sufficient". Officially 347/354PS (340-347bhp) for the B10 4.6 with a similar amount of lb ft in each case, from memory. The V8 S has a 4.8l engine with 375 of each (400+ often claimed when tested on dynos here for unmodified ones). Bear in mind many E39 M5s fall short of their official 400PS/394 bhp in reality (only S62 V8s destined for Z8 production go tmade to "blueprint" spec and made that as a minimum, using weight matched pairs of pistons across the banks etc), plus ALPINA's official outputs are historically quite conservative, they are more of a minimum output on the lowest grade fuel with the engine running in high ambien ttemperature and so on - deliberately understated to remain below BMW's factory offerings via a sort of gentleman's agreement between the firms.
ALPINAs have no 155mph limiter either, unlike factory BMWs, regular or M (165 for Ms in recent years, just to differentiate them from the top of the range diesels).
ALPINA Performance stats: http://www.thealpinaregister.com/stats
The chassis of them is not set to be as overtly sporty as an M car, more like a standard BMW with improved ride control and responsiveness seems to be the usual review. I've only driven a few and they do feel far like a BMW with the speed of an M car, but the comfort and refinement of a standard SE.
As such, they're very niche, UK production volumes are low, quite often single digit or barely double for some models. For instance there is just a single UK B5 V8 S Touring - and about a hundred buyers in queue for it, so the value will stay comfortably high for the present owner. Other more popular models tended to cost around the same or even a bit more than the equivalent ///M, but lower awareness in even the petrolhead community, let alone the wider public sees them depreciate more quickly, close to the level of the standard BMW model upon which they were based, a 540i in the case of the E39 B10 V8.
- semi rising*
How well do you think that example will hold it's value, Z?

You're always likely to get something beginning with a 4 for it.
>agrees with the above<VCAR can affect different cars in different ways according to when and why they were recorded. Generally, they make cars cheaper to buy, but also cheaper to resell.
The delta between those prices and ones for unrecorded cars end up similar, so that in and of itself isn't a huge worry - the fact it makes a car also harder/more faff to sell as well as cheaper is the kicker for me.
If I was happy with the reason it was Cat C/D and present condition was acceptable and it was something I was planning to keep indefinitely, then I wouldn't worry too much about VCAR status, so long as the price was right (rule of thumb seems to be around -25% for Cat D, -33% for Cat C).
I wouldn't consider it on anything I was buying with any view to investment potential.
Can some of you with a bargain barge show average monthly expenses over ownership (excluding fuel and insurance).
Eg
Jan ££270 tax
Feb £0
March suspension plus brakes £700
April £0
May bulbs plus tyres £400
And so on
Then work out average cost pm.
Id be interested to see how this compares against leasing.
Obviously can only make sense if you put up the mileage too.
Basically, is an old s500 cheaper to run than a new Golf R for £200pm?!

You can get a golf r for 200 pcm?!
almost I have one.I'd say it's a certainty that the Golf is cheaper to run as it's cheaper to tax, better on fuel, cheaper to insure (probably by quite a long way), all warrantied etc. but that's not really the point of the thread, or indeed barging. For me it's about smoking around in a whacking great thing that cost an absolute fortune when new, for relatively cheap money, and playing the game a bit to make it as cheap as possible. Comparing it to a mass-produced eurobox (i'm very much allowed to say that, seeing as i own one) is not really fair. They couldn't be further different to drive either.
Also, I'd be surprised if there's anyone on the thread who doesn't understand how to work out average monthly cost, but you never know, man maths being what it is
I'd like to own both anyway.

To the other poster, my idea of bargain barging is buy a big v8 and run it for peanuts.
But, a golf r is far quicker, reliable, better on fuel, more technology etc. plus, its not embarrasing to the majority of the population who just see a 20 year old smoker whereas we see a lovely xjr or 750 etc.
£169.99 plus vat is cheapest ive seen a golf r for.

What's the initial sum down for these though? 204 PCM is a great deal, but only if you don't have to sacrifice your first-born at an altar in the VW showroom when you pick it up.To the other poster, my idea of bargain barging is buy a big v8 and run it for peanuts.

35 months of £300/month = £10500 plus £3k deposit is £13500 over 3 years. Doubt over 3 years there'd be a big amount of difference in overall costs to be honest.
Could sell mine for £5k, put down deposit and that's a few months leasing already,
