Best Smoker Barges 1-5 large [Vol 7]
Discussion
Even if the photographs flatter it immensely, it seems a good buy. 160k miles is not a great deal for these. Only problem, based on the little I know of you from this thread, is that you will set out to "improve" it, with new bushes, rear suspension, springs and paint etc.. Nothing wrong with that whatsoever, but go in with that as at least a strong possibility.

Don't see many for sale, although I did miss one a month or so ago for £4k which was annoying.
Ended within budget. That's pretty epic - surely there's not much else that can touch it for overall power and specification...?http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2003-MERCEDES-S600-LIMOU...

Looking at the bidding activity it's a possibility it was shill bid up to the final selling price. If I was the winning bidder I'd be quite suss about the final bid price.300 CE-24
I've just spoken to the vendor. I bought my SEC off him back in 2008. It doesn't sound like a total basket case. It needs discs and pads all round (£140), new brake pipes (£50) and a thorough service including the transmission and plugs (£200). The engine doesn't leak or smoke. The exhaust is good. The cabin doesn't leak. All the electrics work including the seat belt butlers. The body he reckons is sound underneath. There is little history. It only has one key (but new keys are only £20).
How far you went after that is another matter. There's the front wings and the paintwork generally. The seat bolster. I'd be inclined to put on new shocks (£300) and rear sub-frame bushes (£100). I'd also want to fix the A/C. Condensors are only £80 but compressors are £400 and evaporators are a nightmare.
As Ross points out, it will now need taxing.
On the plus side, it has a private numberplate which is included in the deal and might raise £100.
On the too-good-to-miss side, it has an electric rear blind.
Edit: it has a sportline chassis, outside temperature gauge and cruise control, too. A nice spec on the whole. The problem is it wouldn't be a keeper. I doubt I'd cover my expenditure on a sale. But it might be a bit of fun.

My fear is "Mission Creep".
I occasionally have a look at this thread and see what seems to be a long list of MB. I'm sure somebody will say there are loads of other makes, but it appears that my random visits are dominated by various E and S class MB.
Maybe no other make qualifies as well as MB
Maybe my timing is poor for other makes
Maybe the thread should be renamed "Best smoker MB Barges"
I don't dislike MB, but are they so good that they make up the vast majority of cars that qualify for this thread?

There are a lot of BMWs too. There is also the occasional Jaguar or Audi or Lexus.Maybe no other make qualifies as well as MB

I think it comes down to sales figures. There are a lot more big Mercedes and BMWs on the market in the UK than Jaguar, Audi or Lexus.

I think this is the tack Cat220 took when he changed his Jaguar XJ for the W210 E55 estate. Well, aside from the size of the engine! It seems he has a very understanding wife to go with his collection of cars! My wife just rolls her eyes when I mention the fuel costs of running a big barge...Hi sweetie, I bought us a new car. Tidy Mercedes estate, and typically my marque of choice. In most cases, I would tend to choose a Mercedes. Aside from the fact I now have Cat220's old Jaguar on my drive...
