Having recently been given the brief to find my dad a big petrol engined Ford, believe me they're anything but common since the RFL went up in 2006.

The IS never seems to get much love, although I suspect it's better than much of what else is out there at £2500.

The Mondeo is from a decent range of cars. I get driven around for work in a new one (yeah, yeah, I know, whatever...) and I much prefer it to the alternatives; badge aside it's a really good product and makes sense on all sorts of levels.

So, I'm a fan, but I'm still not sure I'd spend the thick end of 3 grand for a 10 year old one.

Estate or not, it's still a very common Ford, and I reckon the 1-5 band is as much about interesting stuff than just good stuff.
The IS IS good, but not good enough to compensate for what seems like 10mpg worse than a 320i/330i.

And some of the dashboard/door card styling looks like an AIWA stereo.

BMW seem to manage to make the big cars as economical as the smaller cars, whereas Lexus seem to somehow manage to make the small cars as bad as the big ones.

Just about every BMW seems to be capable of 35mpg, where all the Lexus cars seem to be 25-30mpg. Regardless of capacity.

Do it, I dare you! But you have to report back on her reaction. I'm sure we can find a sofa for you to sleep on until the fallout clears hehe
If I were to, I'd be posting on the Match thread as a victim rather than an amused onlooker!

Anyway, as I said elsewhere, we need some of your thoughts about that magnificent Bentley of yours. It may not fit the thread budget, but it's very much part of the thread spirit.

This is a lot of wagon for 4k. Given it had a new gearbox 12 months ago at a cost of 6k. yikes

Bloody hell. Makes you wonder what else is broken though!?
Gearboxes are a known weak spot on the W211, especially the earlier cars like this. More specifically the radiator / oil cooler is a weakness so I would look for evidence of this being done at the same time.

Given the PO has spent £5k on a gearbox I suspect not much else is borked. Car is not too far from me either....

Ben
That looks like a pretty honest ad to me. I reckon that could be a really good buy, esp if you knocked a few hundred quid off the asking.

I rather like it. I need another MB about as much as I do a dose of herpes, but it is my wife's birthday tomorrow, and she's still smarting about me buying the SL, so perhaps I could ease her pain by buying this as a 'gift'? scratchchin
I am probably going to have a look next week sometime, not really in a position to change until my SL is sold which given it is not advertised may be a few weeks!

My journey through the wilderness of an autotrader search without a manufacturer selected continues.

Passat VR6 DSG.

Outback.

Legacy Spec B

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2013...

Spanish X-Type V6... although I expect the auto is the one to have, plenty of choice at the price though.

Let's finish off with an old friend, a rather nice looking E39 530iAT

Some tidy motoring for the coin.

A colleague has a 2.0 v6 x-type that I was very surprised by when I went in it - nice and smooth and I thought the interior was okay. It was a manual and needed an auto though. A very respectable little barge in my opinion, I'd imagine the example about would be nicer with the better engine.

Jay Leno has done a video on his 1972 Mercedes 600 6.3 that's been supercharged.

Well worth 18 minutes of anyone's day!

Will be interesting to see what this 198,000 mile SWB 750i makes on eBay;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261620635578?ssPageName=...

I was interested in this 560 SEC at H and H auctions recently, made £4,520 which was a bit more than I expected;

I know this isn't supposed to be Barryboys but when I see a dirt cheap old 750i I do tend to fantasise about of combining it with a dead E39 to make myself an E39 550i V12 Touring.

Don't be greedy Nick! That looks gorgeous and to me easily worth the £4k if it's solid the history stacks up, no?

How's yours progressing btw?

Whilst the thought is fantastic, I think you'd really struggle to fit the V12 in there....

Still, I won't stop you dreaming hehe

By definition as a 60 degree V12 it's narrower than the 90 degree 4.4 V8, and it's only the same length as a straight six, so...

Anyway, here's one someone else did, it turns out...

Sold for £4,117.55.

Anyone here? I was going to have a cheeky bid at 4K until I found out it hadn't been taxed since Feb 2014 meaning the vendor had covered 2K miles in about a year of ownership and then parked it up. I'm always suspicious of cars that have been sat, particularly with the bork potential of this car.

Good luck to the new owner whoever it is!

So, the last of the vehicles to be reluctantly sold is this 7 series. I say reluctantly, because I have put this car up for sale a few times in the past year that I've owned it, only to decide at the final hour that I want to keep it because I like driving it so much. The car was only supposed to be an in-between vehicle in the first place, as I bought it from a friend who was going abroad for a couple of years. As I have mentioned, I have owned the car for a year now and as the insurance is due to expire in a couple of weeks, I thought this is probably the right time to let go.
What a load of old hooey.

is a V12 the same length as a straight 6? I thought on a V the pistons alternated along the crank, so it's 12 long rather than 6 long but 'doubled'?

Ah, interesting! Still not sure I'd prefer it to something like an M5 lump though.... A V10 one, that is!
