I remember that Fifth gear episode well and as Emeye says that is the pre face lift 940 version. Metal fatigue rust and improvements in car safety design mean that new cars are better than old ones. Amazing how insurance premiums for old cars are much lower than new ones when talking about 3rd party only. Which suggests the likelihood of an average person crashing and injuring their passengers is actually very small. Driving can never be 100% safe.

This dealer's a bit pricey but he's honest and only sells good stuff. I'm very, very tempted by this I just can't justify the MPG on my commute...Thing is I'll never see another one as good. (an it looks like it was supplied by the same dealer as my old S90) Bloody lovely motors!

There's a saloon version on auto trader with a few more miles (c
100k) for £1000.

I'm sure there are worse ways to spend a grand.

If I could get another job within 10-15 miles of home I'd have another one stat! ETA, cracking colour that saloon, too...

NCAP tests are not cross comparative. You can't compare a supermini result with the result form a big SUV. You are much, much better off crashing in a big old Volvo than you are in an UP!

Given the service History, and the marvellous colour, I think that big Volvo is pretty fairly priced.

I'd buy that - probably try and knock off 10% or so. It would still be expensive I suppose, but there's no compromises there. Spec, colour, service history, condition all good. Worth spending a lot more on if you ask me.

Thoughts on this:

I'm quite tempted. I'm not entirely sure if the low mileage is an entirely positive thing, will I end up having to replace a lot of stuff? I'm assuming these don't have the costly airmatic suspension? Is there anything else I should look out for?

I think Airmatic is only on the 500.

The 2.6 isn't the best engine though, not great on fuel and not very quick. I'd look out for a 320 or 350 personally - latter has about 270hp

This will be interesting viewing for those wondering about old vs new crash resistance, and specifically the Volvo linked above!
That is the film I was thinking about, I just couldn't find it. I did read somewhere that they cheated and removed the Volvo engine, but not sure if that was true?

There was a thread about that. The test was legit (the engine was there), but a bit contrived. Someone knowledgeable said the model of Volvo used didn't actually have a front crossmember (or something or other that made the front a bit feeble). Had the test car been an 850 it would have been much less dramatic, apparently.

Quite a rare car. They actually got very good road test reviews back in the day, but the public never warmed to the rather dull looks. I would expect one to outlive me. smile

The strap line for the advert at the time acknowledged the lack of awareness. It simply said 'The Nissan QX. It exists.' laugh

Here's a quick update on this 540i/6 Touring that first featured in volume 2, way back in December 2011. I bought it from olly755 in early 2012, when it looked like this:

Two years and almost 20,000 miles later, it now looks like this:

I've decided not to add up how much I've spent so far - that way madness lies. I do know that I've worked my way through almost all the common e39 and 540i issues, and that hopefully I'll now get a few years without any four-figure bills - fingers crossed.

It's a great car - the freshened suspension, lighter flywheel and 'simplified' exhaust make it very entertaining on roads like those pictured.

That's so much car for the money. I'd debadge it (if it isn't debadged already) for even more stealth. I like the little wheels and lack of M SPORTness

I have been enjoying the world of company car ownership so have been sheltered from the running cost of a car bar the tax. I was wondering what the average spend to keep a large engined BMW 5 series or W124 on the road is, is it silly money to have as an extra car in the drive for what is family camping trips and trips to the extended family. I know it could be a how long is a piece of string answer but a rough slush fund for keeping a V8 on the road would be appreciated.

I had a 550i Touring, it was worth every penny.

At a third the price, definitely!

The 545i is about 30hp down, but I don't think it would be noticeable.

Everyone seems to spend MILES more than I do.

£250 a year, tops, to keep something sheddy rolling.

Parts are pennies, and the nuts and bolts are simple.
