Calling all e39 aficionados (Fox, I'm looking at you, you must have encountered this in over 200k miles).

Knackered headlight adjusters, how did you fix this without spending £800 on two new headlights? This would be much easier with halogen units but trying to find facelift xenon units with adjusters fixed is proving difficult.

Oh bks, I'm in Stirling too. I do like a barge, and that looks real nice.
Well in that case I propose a barge appreciation session over a cup of tea, somewhere in Stirling, this weekend. Any other threadists care to join? beer

On Mercs it is usually one of the senders which are attached to the anti-roll bars front and back rather than the lamps themselves (and think about it, it would be a hell of a coincidence for both lamps to fail simultaneously). It is not the best place in the world for a sensitive little electronic gadget to live out its life. I don't suppose it is any different on BMWs.

I had the height sensor replaced when I first got the car due to the lights pointing down at the ground. It's the mechanism. The lights vibrate at speed, there's excessive play when you grab the back of the bulbs and wiggle them. I'm led to believe this is still something to do with the adjuster mechanism despite the fact the lights do adjust their height when I turn them on...

On facelift cars the repair requires you to either bake/heat the lights to free the glue, allowing the housing to come apart.

All this AMG chat, currently up the North west coast of Scotland with the e55 (w210) the roads are just fantastic, think I passed one car heading south to Ullapool, the 5.4 n/a is a total joy, makes a lovely noise when pushing on and provides mountains of torque across the rev range. Even fully loaded makes for very brisk overtaking.
The 55k in w211 form would seem a natural progression perhaps in a few years. The chap I bought the w210 from had bought a 55k, he did say he very rarely got to exploit the 476bhp, only been in one briefly and it was an absolute monster.
Lovely, get us some pictures - a great part of the world for driving. When I get my W124 back (I, er, lengthened the to do list with the garage, and will be away this weekend!) I will be back there. I'd like to try the 5.4 NA, I bet it's good fun.
"Heading south to Ullapool" means you are about as far north as you can get! Any excuse to post the Kylesku bridge picture below. If you want any recommendations, let me know. We're heading up there tomorrow in the diseasel. Even in that car, the roads are a joy. In fact, part of the enjoyment is keeping up the pace in a car with so little power. The Tesla wouldn't suit me just yet.

I like to try and get up here at least a week every year, like to think of it as good for the soul. Love that picture at Kylesku, I was there yesterday! lots of low cloud with wind and rain yesterday, however between Ledmore junction and Ullapool the cloud lifted and the rain stopped so managed some good pictures (for me) of Stac Pollaidh and the surrounding area. We're in Ullapool until Tuesday so if you're heading up here give me a shout. You're spot on regards the roads, no matter what your in it's driving nirvana.

On some of them you can't even heat them to get them to apart.

You could try one of the ebay repair people who'll do you exchange units if you don't want to have a crack yourself.

The *45i engine is a peach - I have it in my 745i (which, coincidentally, is for sale in Scotland within thread budget, but I digress hehe) but there is one major consideration: the potential coolant pipe leak. Google it and you'll see that it's a 50p seal within the engine that goes and BMW will take several thousand quid off your hands to fix. There is a cheaper fix but still over a grand. Of course it might not happen to you, but if you can find one where it's been sorted already you are protected against it. Did I mention that I had the issue with my 745i and had it fixed at great expense? But I digress again hehe
Well this looks nice good advert as well.

Looks identical to mine on the outside. Only thing is... The red car light is on, with no faults showing, so it's overdue on some service item?

Looks good, lower miles than mine. I'm dreading the coolant thing, I'm sure it'll happen to me but I'll cross that road when I get to it.

I've just noticed that on yours when the coolant is cold you have the lower rev counter, like mine, but also in the speedo.... I swear mine used to do that but doesn't any more confused I'll check later tonight! Weird.

Think the wee red car symbol is because it thinks it wants new coolant, but the coolant was changed when I sorted the coolant pipe leak; I think the garage that did it just neglected to set the service indicator.

The line on the speedo comes up when I've used cruise, it's not related to engine temp.

Do you have the car MOT'd at a BMW main dealer? If not, then the service overdue warning could be that.

Our E91 325 flags up a 'service due' red warning light if the car thinks it needs an MOT. Interrogating the 'i' drive reveals the car needs a 'statutory inspection' - rather than a service of the mechanicals/oil change etc., which is still a while off.

Last time, disorganisation meant the MOT became pressing and it was done at a garage down the road, who didn't reset the computer - so the car thinks it has no MOT. This may be the reason.

I referenced him in the thread I made about this. I might just remove the lights myself and send them away for repair. Having an extra car could prove useful now.

I'm pretty sure it's engine temp, with cruise you just get the arrow which is a full arrow when the cruise is active, or an arrow with a "hollow" centre when it's inactive but the speed is still set (so pressing the resume button with make the car accelerate back to that speed).

Hmmm, who knows!

Good luck with the sale. Resetting the coolant on the obc is quite easy by the way.

Apropos of nothing :cough: what mpg could one anticipate from a 745i in mixed use, but mainly local/town? Not sitting in queues of traffic as such, just pottering?

This E320 looks a lot better than most, crap plate and slightly iffy rims notwithstanding. Sensible miles & LPG!

Went for £1500 in the end, looks a very decent buy to me. Would have made a great replacement for our Rover 75 V6 tourer... which with typically poor timing has literally just failed its MOT, needing about half its value spent on it (in fairness it only cost me £750 nearly two years ago, and has since required only £250 in maintenance/repairs).

Low 20s. I do mostly motorway and over the last 1k miles I'm averaging 27mpg driving sensibly but not like my nan and occasionally using the engine as intended.

Just town and short trips will be high teens.

About the same as my E34 540 then. Not bad considering the extra weight+grunt.

Extra weight and power, more efficient engine design by a decade/two generations (M60 superseded by VANOS equipped M62, in turn superseded by Valvetronic N62), plus an extra gear ratio that if nothing else improves the 50mph+ economy/overall average.

As Ross says, I'd expect 15-20 average for town pottering (the E38 750i was about that too), high 20s possibly slipping to early 30s (with due restraint applied...) motorway for an average 22-24 in most cases.

If it's all town stop/start and urban crawl though, 10-15 would be a more pragmatic figure to work with.
