Leaving aside the implicit arrogance in anyone questioning how you spend your own money, the reality is that you've spent (comparatively) little in restoring a (comparatively) expensive car (in its hey-day), to a level that will see it last another motoring generation. It'll be as fresh, sorted and as safe as virtually every other car on the road today.

If you're remotely tree-huggy, it's also a really environmentally sound way of motoring, as the real environmental cost of cars is in their manufacture rather than use or disposal, so to keep them running is good for the planet, as well as the barge-ist's mental well-being.

Some good posts from Ross and Oa on chucking money on older (obviously keeper) barges. On both my X308 and W210 I've spent in excess of mkt value (purchase price included) getting them to where I want them to be. I wouldn't be happy with them otherwise.

The vast majority was not "needed". My approach was to go through what needed doing with my mechanic and get the car to the state where it can do another 170k in comfort with little needing doing. Engine/transmission and then finally paint to come!

How does this rate? Looks clean, straight and in a nice part of the North. Is it too expensive? I know the 1.8 is meant to be super slow but with those looks, I don't think outright pace is important. I'm also heartened to see what looks like a clarinet in the boot, though I may be mistaken

Another subscriber to this way of life here. I bought a new sports coat last month. Nothing much wrong with the old one, but after 12 years I fancied a change. I am sure both will still be brushing against the driver's seat bolster of the 124 in 12 years time.

We've just returned from another Scottish touring holiday in the 124. It really is the best car of all time, for me, at least. It feels so permanent and it functions so well. It is just shy of 300,000miles. I don't care that it has no value to anyone else: to me it is irreplaceable. I've done 20,000miles since the completion of my refurbishment this April and it has cost me nothing but oil and filters and tyres in that time. Every mile that passes under its wheels makes that insane refurbishment cheaper and cheaper and cheaper.

Likewise my acquaintances (most of whom earn more than I do) don't understand me spending £200-£300 on a pair of shoes. The fact that (a) they're more comfortable that their cheap shi!te and (b) I'll still have them in 10 years, does not compute.

I think I've been to that dealer before looking at a Mk1 MX5.
I don't think the red helps the contours and makes it look a bit ungainly. That said, I love colours that go against the grain.

Not a fan of the spoiler or hubcaps (although I had similar wheel-trims on my 190E and they looked OK on the smaller car) Don't mind red but I would prefer contrasting lower cladding (my 190E was signal red with darker tartan red bumpers and cladding)

Not sure about this one. A bit over priced? Body looks to be in good condition but the silver is too silvery. Then again, I'm viewing on my phone and I'm half cut.
