A big fat American car. 3.6l v6, pre-2006 for road tax purposes, 44,000 miles

It's absolute crap. These were the joker in the pack to anyone renting a luxury car in the US until they finally killed them a few years ago.

It's amazing really because the transformation has been significant - Cadillac went from a range filled with cars which almost all sucked to a range which is now full of absolutely brilliant cars. The new CTS particularly is absolutely excellent.

I'm sure it's crap in many ways, but it'll almost certainly be comfortable, reliable and well equipped. My dad's had various crap american cars for as long as I can remember, always bought second hand for less than half the cost of the german equivalent, and always run for years with no problems whatsoever. A lot of people don't care about handling or interior plastics, and just want something comfortable with a bit of power that they don't have to be taking to the dealership every month, and isn't the same as a million other cars on the road. At £10k I completely agree that it'd be a terrible purchase, at £3k you could do worse IMO.

This man speaks sense. Not my sort of thing, but I can see the appeal.

That champagne edition E39 looked amazing, but on the basis that I have two E39s already I would have had to pass to avoid being seen as greedy!

Whilst on the topic of 'unicorn', I found out last week that a 2004/53 540i manual sport touring lives locally, I have spotted it twice now, looks very well looked after. Need to find out where it lives or try and leave a note on it... I understand it is one of only 12 RHD 540i manual sport tourings!
I'm not sure they are quite that rare but if you are right it would be good - I have one. The other is an M5, so I don't think would qualify for this thread, but well within budget I did pick up this a few weeks ago after someone posted it on a similar V12 thread (confirming the point that there are lurkers who might strike in the spur of the moment!):

The CTS got better as time went on so the fact the newer model was panned doesn't bode well for the older model.

The current one though, now THAT will be a barge bargain. What a car.

A 3/4k CTS-V would be quite the thing, but I expect you can count the number of UK cars on the thumbs of one hand...

I've actually driven one of those (a 3.6) and I disagree with Whatcar on some points. I found it pretty good.
I don't doubt that residual value is terrible though.

I had an XJS with the 6.0L engine years ago. Its like a form of teleporting - you get in, then arrive somewhere far away without being aware of anything except you feel lovely and relaxed. thumbup

That's nice apart from the badges on the wings!
I'd really, really like an XJ40 one.

There's some debate on one of the Jag forums about whether they might be OE. There's certainly another one out there with the same V12 badges. I'd happily lose both but the Union Jack one has been screwed into the bodywork so I'm pretty much limited to leaving it with both or just that one unless I want to get into the hassle of filling and repainting, etc.

I agree 540i Tourings are not that 'rare', but they are in manual and sport guise, how many left shows 9 licensed and 1 SORN, it peaked at 12 - see link https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/vehicle/bmw_540_i_sp...

Love the Double Six, but not so sure about the rear tints?

E65 is back. fk me was it expensive but fk me does it feel amazing! I also got billed for the mass air flow sensor which hadn't been paid yet but here goes....

What was done and cost, ...

Pollen filter £32
Air filter £16
Fuel filter £50
R/H anti-roll drop link £30
L/H anti-roll drop link £30
2x suspension buffers £20
2x bump stops £17
2x spring £110
2x spring £90
2x front tyres £323.48
2x rear tyres £339.78
Mass air flow sensor £170
2x lower arms £230
2x top mounts £80
2x top mounts £32

Plus 4 wheel alignment etc.....

It was a mate who did it and all of that totals £1884.31 after VAT and that included labour (of which I don't think I got charged a penny!) and part prices were pretty much trade price.

I've no doubt that would have cost an extra £4-500 if it was done at an indy and I actually got charged labour and part price increase!

The car feels amazing. Ride quality has improved a little, but it handles SO much flatter and feels so much more tight it's surreal. Comfortably my biggest ever car bill but it feels amazing! Pretty much a full suspension rebuild, aside shock absorbers. Tyres were £700 of that pretty much.

That sounds like a very well looked after car. Do you think all the maintenance will add to the resale value markedly or just make it easier to sell?

I have literally no idea. It will probably be a bit of both....not a massive resale value but I'd certainly want more, and I think it'd be easier to sell too, of course.

Based on all that if I can afford to keep it it'll be staying for a while yet. The only big potential bills left after the coolant and oil leaks....once that's done the car will be fantastic....it isn't leaking coolant but it's the only big potential bill left (famous last words).

The reason I say if I can afford to keep it...I'm saving for a house purchase....circumstances may force sale when the time comes; also, sadly, was diagnosed with a brain tumour just last week and the neurologists aren't sure exactly what to do yet as it's an extremely rare tumour so I'm waiting to hear back (should be tomorrow!!) on their plan of action. I've been very ill for a long time, it's taken them 15 months (!!!!!) to find it. I'm hoping they can fix me....if not, I'll leave it to my best mate to do with as he pleases (he's also a PHer and a barge fan, and really likes the car). If I require surgery I probably won't be able to drive for a while.

I cannot describe just how fresh it feels, it's amazing.
