Anyway - the reason I popped in, is it's an MB world Sunday Service this week (apologies if it's already been mentionned). I'm hoping to be able to get to it - but I remember the last one there I met Ross and a good number of other bargists. Saw Jonathan's 124 and JJ's pagoda. I'm assuming r129sl isn't an exhibitionist this time? Anyone going?
Unfortunately not me as it's Remembrance, and I have a speaking part elsewhere. Enjoy it though.
Wife's on call this weekend and, like CdeG, other duties on Sunday morning, so not me, either, I'm afraid. Next time?

Nice. Lovely colour - similar to Mistral blue on my XJ8. OE mats and flaps - always a good sign.

What's that in the arm rest? Is that to hold cassettes or CDs? I feel I should already know this....

Is it not just the top texture of the lid of the armrest?

Nope, them's spring loaded cassette dispensers, press the button at the near end and up pops a cassette. I don't think 126s got rolltop storage between the seats.

Wearing the wheels from one of the Mille Miglia special editions too. Outrageous value. Drove my 129 yesterday for the first time in 5 weeks and had forgotten how much I love it.

Readers may remember I missed out on the £9k SL600. I've just shown my wife that 500, together with a page from the MBClub forum showing one with a couple of kids of our age in the back.

"Get it" she said.

For £3k you cannot really argue, and at that price I'd be happy to throw a couple of k at it at IN Autos to sort out any niggles. But part of me is saying "it's not a 600". I suppose the 500 is still adequate?

Lots of Internet chat about the 500 being a better ownership proposition than the 600 anyway - difference in fuel, parts costs and working on them.

The 320 v6 in mine is absolutely spot on for the car imho; I have a 500 engine in another shape Merc so have experience of both. I've never found my SL320 lacking in power, put it that way - and I've had a wide spectrum of slow and fast cars over the years.

I would opine that the 600 that was for sale is no way three times better a car than that 500.

I can't imagine my wife ever saying something like that - if I were you I would buy the 500, waft along to the V8 burble, and let the knowledge of having a bargist-friendly wife make up for the 4 missing cylinders.

The 500 is adequate. But who wants to be just adequate?

The M119 V8 is probably the best V8 of all time. But the M120 V12 really is a masterpiece. If you can, then you know you should.

That's quite some statement, there! Just out of question, what is it about it you think it's best?

Perhaps one or 2 of its features are "best", but there will be other features of other V8s will are also better. Or do you mean best V8 of all time, for your personal requirements?

I know over thread budget but do people think this is over priced?

I really want a 750 but is it too much at that price?

Sound philosophy, although I remember some concern expressed about the 600SL when it was new.
It was described as almost too refined, almost anodyne in its complete lack of mechanical interaction with the driver.
The V8 cars (especially the SL60) have their distinct (although muted) burble, the V12 had no noise at all.

If you get the chance to own one though, why not!

It was Mercedes money-no-object engineering at its very best, imho.

The engine is supremely smooth, and with power to spare. I had an s600 w140 and I rarely needed to go over 1500rpm for everyday driving, such was the power. My car had 190k on the closk and was running beautifully. Because they are pretty unstressed (they are bored out to 7.3l for the Zonda remember) it really is a super reliable unit.

If you wanted to make it noisier, change the cats or remove a silencer, they can make quite a sound!
