Nice. Thistle Green IIRC.
My Dad had 2 new W124s in that colour, a 230E manual in 1986 and a 230E auto in 1987. Both with the 15 hole alloys, electric sunroofs and rear electric windows. Very fond memories of them.
In the 90s my Dad and I brought a couple of new W210s back from the factory in Stuttgart.
Would love to recreate tthat trip with my Dad for my upcoming 40th, but to go over and buy a 500E or RS2 and drive it back. Scared about the car buying process in Germany, though, and the fact the cars we see may be rubbish.
This looks like it would do:

I quite fancy buying a 400 E from Germany but am put off by the rigmarole apparently involved. That and the possibility that LHD is really tedious in the UK.My Dad had 2 new W124s in that colour, a 230E manual in 1986 and a 230E auto in 1987. Build quality improved a lot, but there was also a lot of de-contenting in integrity terms of replacing more proper craft and 'real' materials with mouldings and plastics.
You are right there. There are some plastics in the X300/X308 that feel pretty hokey. The X300 maybe moreso because there is more plastic around the driver console area, and the little switch arrays on either side of the steering wheel. But they both have their suspect plastics, in places. The rear door ashtrays, for instance - the lids look pretty ghastly up close and don't fit particularly well! The dash top is also plastic, but it's quite an inoffensive thing. However, I'd trade a few handcrafted details like that to save having to deal with the handcrafted electronics the XJ40 is infamous for!
EDIT: As much as I love Jaguar interiors, the finery can sometimes go a little too far. Look at this horror. I'm sure the blue tint to the picture doesn't help, but it's all too much. The incredibly heavy burl on the wood, of which there is just too much, and the wooden steering wheel with the gold Daimler 'D' on it looks similarly excessive and not in a good way. I like some of the details like the inlaid 'V12' badge but a little restraint with the wood would have been nice. If it were not so heavily figured, it might be less offensive to the eye. And this, coming from me, who loves wood in cars and felt the M5 lost part of it's soul when BMW stopped doing the wooden inserts and detailing!

The 400 E! Good shout. Even more stealth. I've only ever seen one in Boston in the 90s.The 500 E, RS2 and E34 M5 Touring now seem to be more expensive in Germany than the UK. But somehow it wouldn't be as cool to buy one in the UK.
Out of thread budget, but this looks amazing to my eye. The gallery is worth opening up and salivating over. http://www.sturm-automobile.de/aktuell/album4/01an...

Aye, polished to a tee, that sack is. I didn't stop for a photograph, but the wife was confused when I shouted "hey, look at that Jag!" as it rolled past. Everyone else was looking at the bull...
RE: Frank's list of things to look out for above on the Jaguar XJ, yes, they definitely have their foibles like most older luxury cars. Mitigating these and enjoying a fantastic car for a little money is the name of the game in this thread (and in life!). There are plenty of rubbish XJ8's for sale and I would personally skip past anything being sold on a run down council estate, or from a shady trader's yard. The first one I posted though, despite being somewhat suspect, isn't that far from my old office so I could park there and walk to it in fifteen minutes, so I'd view it, were I in the market. The quickest way to cut the wheat from the chaff when buying an XJ is probably to look at the arches - if you can put your hand through them and grab hold of a seat cushion or whatever, it's not worth your time.
Paradoxically, there is plenty that can go wrong with them and then not a great deal that can go wrong with them. Much like anything, you take your chance and you pay your money and hope your homework will have paid off. At 160,000 miles and 14 years old, mine feels like it's got a few more years of solid enjoyment in it yet and I hope this proves to be the case. I'm trying to be kind to my XJ8, and it's going to get a good wash over the next couple of days and then some waxoyl on the bottom.
Don't bother with the Waxoyl, definitely not the best product out there in my opinion. Oh Hello! Has my W124 arrived at last?Edited by 0a on Tuesday 25th November 21:43
Saloon? check
pre-Sacco? check
6 cylinder? check
Willow Green? check
velour interior? check
lacquer peel and rust hole? ah bum!
I recognise that car, was for sale no too long ago, can't remember price, but may have been up for around £2k then resisted and sold for around £1300. Could be confusing it with another pre-Sacco Willow Green 260E for sale around he same time. Actually I'm not, the other one had beige cloth and was in Doncaster for around £3k I think. Think it had even fewer miles, well under 50k.

That is a lovely looking car. Green suits these well (in fact, the only colours I don't really like on them are maroon, flat red and white). Jasper Metallic Green is just heavenly. But this is nice too. The photos on that advert are a disaster; shot with a potato by the looks of things, terribly framed and poorly lit. The use of the flash does the car no favours, highlighting the dirt in the wheel arches and drawing the eye to those shabby carpets. It should clean up nicely though. The seats will be a boon, as they are very comfortable. The standard A8 seats, with the stitched leather stripes along the base and back, weren't much good. The sports seats are more comfortable and more supportive, and are a must. It'd be interesting to see what the spec of the car is, as the advert doesn't give much away. I can see there is no heated seats in the rear (but the rear socket is there, great for charging your phone if you look it back towards the console. There are a few blank switches on the dash and no nav/entertainment/TV screen.
Could well be a canny buy.

When I bought from there earlier this year, it was painless. There are guys that can handle all the paperwork for you, just had over your passport for an hour and they come back with your transit plates and insurance. Cost about 100 Euros iirc.Registering over here was no big deal either: I doubt that I spent an hour on it in total.
Hopefully doing it again in Jan!
