I phoned and left a message along with emailing some time back about that car, with no response in return. Having said that, if someone did manage to get hold of the seller and wanted me to check it out, I'd be happy to do so as it's local to me
Ah, yeah, just noticed the "Listing Date: 07-Oct-2014"

Might be dodgy , any exporters would have picked it up by now.

Hi all,

I'm a close friend of Ross (E65 Ross). I think he said in this thread that he was having an op for a brain tumor.

His brother has said that he is out of surgery and in intensive care, still not yet awake. Apparently the surgery was a success.

Matt
Fantastic news Matt, thankyou for the post.

I'm glad to hear this but still a way to go, I am sure. Best wishes to him.

Matt,

It is good news indeed to hear things went well for Ross who is not only a popular member of this thread but also, by all accounts a thoroughly nice guy.
Tell him when he wakes up we are thinking of him, and awaiting his return.
When he is out of hospital I aim to come down and see him as I promised him a look at the Lexus (finally properly joined the barge brigade) smile

If he is a football fan just don't mention yesterday to him! wink

You'd have to be mad to pay £1,500 for this - it must be worth £500 with the 'slight rust' on the rear arches. A rare barge though and apparently one owner from new. http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C564842 - is it basically a rover 800?

Nice car. Almost identical to mine same age, colour, and engine!

Feb top mounts are about £75 a side. They are not a terrible job to DIY but need some planning and persistence. There are three real problems: 1) Getting the engine lifted high enough to get to the top bolts (high is the answer) 2) Breaking the top bolt 3) getting the old mounts out and new ones in. It made a massive difference to my car along with all the other rubbery bits in the front suspension and steering that I replaced at a similar time.

If you are a member of the Mercedes Owners Club I posted a thread on there about the job. If you fancy having a go yourself have a read.
Sadly DIY out of the question as I have nowhere to do it. Having looked at them they aren't that bad (engine moves very slightly to the passenger side not the alarming jump I've seen on YT videos). I could really do with the contact details of a decent place in the UK....I'm going to join the MB club though as I can tell already this car is a keeper.
Its like having access to an exclusive London club but only paying Weatherspoon's money for the privilege.
Depends where in the country you are based. The Mercredes Owners Club is well worth the 30 odd quid for tips and receommendations.

Think you will find the Rover 800 was basically an Accord. Without the reliability. The 2.7v6 was a peach though.

SO - I've got a W124 in the crosshairs at the moment.

Couple of questions from those what know.

1) How much to have a seat repaired properly by a finisher? Just the usual bolster wear. Needs to be a nice job with genuine fabric.

2) What radio do people recommend as being modern but in keeping?

The seat should be cheap. Less than £100 for the labour. I find you get a lot of work and skill for very little cash in auto upholstery. For matching cloth/leather or whatever, buy a used rear headrest in the same upholstery from Ebay. They're generally about £15.

The wireless set is more difficult. The last Becker units had Bluetooth, iPod and sat nav. They look right and have the correct colour illumination. They stopped making them in about 2010. They fetch an absolute fortune used. The models are Grand Prix 7990, Indianapolis Pro 7950 and Cascade 7944/7949 or Cascade Pro 7941. They also require an iPod Remote Kit to connect up to an iPod.

Other than that, there are not many options. A Mercedes-Benz branded set will not look quite right unless it is this one http://www.car-radio.de/product_info.php?info=p19_... and none of them have Bluetooth for the phone or a proper iPod connection (though this vendor offers an aux in socket or you can get one of those FM input jobs and a discreet Parrot kit). I would be tempted to get an Alpine or Pioneer unit with orange illumination. Some of the Blaupunkts don't look too horrendous, either.

The speakers in the 124 are not the best. Rainbow do super drop in alternatives, but they're expensive.

Edit: the other headunit worthy of consideration is the Porsche Classic single DIN. It is available unbranded and has iPod, Bluetooth and sat nav.

The Accord was a twin-project with the 600. 800 was a shared project with the Legend

(great website)

ETA: twin-project is perhaps overstating it. The 600 was a rebodied Accord. (And a very good car).

I have a Becker Traffic Pro (Hi Speed) in my S124 with an Alpine amp in the boot (behind the side panel opposite the spare wheel), Morel drop-in replacement speakers in the front, Morel drivers in the rear doors and a bazooka type sub in the boot finished in mushroom leather and detachable for when I got to the tip.

The Becker is amazing and you can get them on eBay for £150 or so. You might need ISO adapters, GPS aerial and a kit to connect it to your iPhone/ iPod. I also have a separate Parrot unit on Bluetooth phone duties which integrates with the whole system perfectly well.

You will need someone who knows what they are doing to install and configure it. I used Auto Audio in Park royal. Excellent service.

Think you will find it was basically a Legend, not an Accord. The one that corresponded to the Accord was the 600.

None of the 800s I used to drive ever gave any trouble, mind you they were all fairly new as company fleet cars, and the 2.7 KV6 was indeed a peach. Especially with the manual box, in which form it was really quite a rapid car.
