Fantastic. I am sad enough to sit here and go through all the colours!

Just look at "406 Cayenneorange", wouldn't be allowed now on a 4 door car:

Driver's got plenty cool, too!

More colour here, lots and lots of pictures in just about all the different hues: http://www.classicway.de/overview.php?idtitel=farb...

As you say, it makes today's cars look very drab. I often have a look for a nice Porsche 997 in an interesting colour. They don't exist. They're all silver, grey or black. I sometimes daydream about placing a special order for a new E-Class but insisting it have a large petrol engine, wood trim, tan leather upholstery, an "Elegance" grille and solid green paint.
I like the new E-Class as a basic shape, but all the ones I see come with silly sport grills and pathetic but economical engines.

Phooor look at this colour: http://www.classicway.de/overview.php?idtitel=farb...

For some reason, that's only in the UK. Check out the German price lists: there you can get a petrol 300, 350, 400 and 500 (and you can get them in RHD: see the Japanese and Australian markets). And you can get a proper grille. Heck, you can even get light ivory or metallic brown paint!

When I'm in Dublin I see quite a few like the one above. I often think Mbuk are missing a trick not offering the pukka grille.

That 500E must be a Jap import looking at the wheels/tyres/interior.

129 still falling... they'll soon be free.
£2650 - this unmessed with 300 24v looks lovely.

I was looking at that earlier - incredible value. This will be one of those posts quoted in future years to illustrate the silly value of r129s before they went up!

I keep my fingers crossed on this score. Although I can't see mine ever being worth anything with 238,000miles on the clock. What it is good for is proving that these cars are up to it in a way very few others are. Mine is garaged these days, but it had years of standing outside in all weathers; it has been a commuter, a shopper, a long distance traveller; it has been driven as fast as I dare (in fact it usually gets driven far too fast); it has been left with the roof down in a thunderstorm; it has been used to transport furniture; it once had three women on the back seat. I think if you saw it you'd be amazed that it isn't a 50k mile car, but it has nothing that they don't all have. They're just really, really high quality. And not that complex.

Japanese import? Aftermarket interior retrim?
Quite probably, it highlights what good value SL500s are though, and you can get them in RHD unlike the E500.

Well, the wife suggests that, as it's my birthday today, I should just buy that impala 260E, sight unseen, and deal with the consequences later.

As it's your birthday, shouldn't she be too busy on her knees about now?

When the consequences are owning a nice W124 why worry? Get on with it sir!

How much work have you done on the R129 compared to your w124? I have no doubt I will purchase one of the cheapest ones on a whim sometime soon - I take it a 100k+ mile example needs the full suspension refresh that a w124 would need to make it nice?

Happy Birthday! I like her idea of the perfect present, even if you do have to buy it yourself.

At least AMGs have special engines, the new m3 just has a tuned 135/335 jobbie frown what a contrast to the E46/92

Mercedes used to look after the 'middle' rather well though, now there's nothing. What happened to the reintroduction of straight 6s that was mooted a year or two ago?

To be honest, not that much. Very little for a couple of years now. It was expensive between 100k and 150k miles. It's had a full suspension refresh, of course (I've done the shocks twice now), but it has been done incrementally. It has had new brake callipers, both fronts and rears started sticking at different times. It has needed an air con condenser. Alternator. Power steering pump and steering box. Two offside headlamps. Two offside headlamp wiper motors. Engine mounts. Shed loads of tyres. Nothing has ever really gone wrong with it.

But the consequences are

yet another old car that I don't have room for
yet another old car that will do 100 miles per year
yet another old car that I will spend every other weekend trying to 'improve'

Still, it does loo lovely - but the SEC would absolutely have to go first.

Thank you for your contribution. It elevates the discussion. Can we return to cars?
