Interesting article on the Phaeton here;

http://jalopnik.com/254379/jalopnik-fantasy-garage...

I've always quite liked these. Sounds like VW are considering a new model in a year or two.

Ermmmm.... I'd swear that's my old car that Kiwifraser bought off me, but on a different plate. What's the mileage?

It's on 195k. The plate is a personal one that's coming off - the original ends NCF. Yours?

That looks a belter. The E39 is probably BMW's best saloon car.
I HATE white cars but doesn't think look wonderful...

I always get put off by the E39 black leather - it looks like the seats are covered with bin bags!

Did anyone go and see this? Seems absolutely fantastic, but it's still for sale!
There was a time when everyone all agreed that white was a crap colour for a car.

At the moment the world has gone a bit mad, and lots of people have forgotten that.

But not the tasteful discerning petrol barge-shopper. He still understands that white is a crap colour for a car.

Sounds ridiculous to say, but starting bids at £3k may be too strong for a 300 on a 'J' I think. Bornite is a great colour and looks to be in pretty good condition.

Oil pressure sitting below 2 raises an eyebrow though...
"the last owner has serviced it by a friend after that so there is no record after 2007."
Hmm for that engine and that generation merc to make strong money it needs history. The ad also talks of age related marks - sounds like a car worth a lot less than the asking price to me.
I love 'age-related marks'.

I'm sure a real expert can tell the difference between the good news 'age-related marks' and the bad news 'dragged-past-a-concrete-gate-post-related marks', but I can't.

How old does a car need to be before the evidence of having dragged it past a gatepost is an age-related thing, as opposed to a gatepost-related thing?

I feel this is something I should really know.

Generally yes. But this looks bloody great and I'd gladly have a white one:

Agree. Just yesterday I saw a "14" plate car with a nasty dent in it, is that age-related?

I'm looking forward to the summer so I can get on with polishing the E65 up. Whilst not age-related, it does have some speed-related stone chips on the front that would ultimately require a front bumper and bonnet respray frown

The context of that photo helps a lot.

It looks great, but for me, that's in spite of the colour, not because of it.

For me, it fails both the Aldi test and the funeral test, where a dark blue one on normal wheels/height would easily pass.

I am very pleased that white is now "allowed" again. Don't go too far though - I always have loved white cars and this daftness ensures a decent cheapish supply :-)

Yum.

I've always coveted the lesser spotted white B10 personally. Sadly, (understandably?) very few punters were brave enough at the time.

That's brilliant! It drove very nicely indeed and had a big pile of history. What work was done one the suspension in your time?

None at all during my 6-month tenure (I sold it early last year) but it was probably due a refresh.
