129 many thanks for that post, what an amazingly comprehensive reply. Thankyou for taking the time to research and write it up. That is exactly what I need and I will be making some orders today.

It may seem strange to spend money on something worth little, but the car fits into my life very well and I like it. I see it as an alternative to spending £10k on a focus diesel.
Oa, I have added a couple of links at the end of my post that might save money. There is a guy on Ebay selling Febi stuff at massive discounts. I have bought from him and he seemed reliable. I'm going to stop now but if there is anything in particular, let me know.

£3k but only 45k miles with Jag service history.
Blimey! What we can see of it looks damn nice!!!

No linky? Keeping your cards close to your chest to prevent Bargista gazumpage? laugh
Here's a link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1998-Jaguar-XJ-Series-3-...
Test drove the Jag this morning.

Good points: Colour combo, looks fantastic from 20 paces, low mileage, mechanically faultless.

Bad points: Dent on front nearside wing, small dent on rear nearside wing, bumper scuffs, sagging headlining, drivers door seal needs replacing. Rear nearside window frame badly rusted on the inside???

In general the driving experience suffered from comparison to my E39 540T. The (3.2 V8) Jag had a lack of oomph below 3.5k rpm, ride not significantly better than a 168k mile E39 and, unforgivably, an overly loud indicator tick tock noise.

Another thumbup to r129sl from me!

Also, I saw prop bearings mentioned, the rubber donut on the centre prop mount on the C124 is shot and the vibration above 50mph is horrendous. Has anyone here changed one and if so, how much of a ball ache is it?

Speaking of the C124, I was in need of a quick dirty food fix so I swung by the local Golden Arches last night. On the food hatch was a typical spotty 18 year old, who asked me to park in the waiting bays for my food. I have to admit to instantly stereotyping him as the usual halfwitted, semi-unwashed illiterate Saxo-adoring chav that his looks and voice portrayed. This illusion was totally destroyed when he brought the food to me and told me how much he liked 124-shape Mercs, especially the coupes thumbup . He wanted one but was waiting till he hit 21 for reasonable insurance.

Lesson learnt, don't judge a book by its cover.

Can't believe I'm going to post a Rover here but this looks great for the price and if memory serves, these Sterling models were the same as the contemporary Honda Legend (or was it Accord?):

Now that is a piece of history!
As I recall they have a Rover engine, it was the 827i that was a Honda unit.
I have owned both the 825i and 827i Sterling (in my distant past before I finally realised these were cheap for a reason) but I also have to admit to feeling a yearning for it rolleyes

I note they removed the straw hat and blanket before taking the pics wink

Looks nice, and for £1k I almost wonder what is wrong with it?
Where is it in NI?
I am over again this week (work for a very large NI based company so over there very regularly) and may take a quick peek myself.

It's in ballybofey just over the border in donegal. Still northern region though so no registering to be done. 180k miles very very tidy. I'm no mechanic but last year's mot it only needed a headlight bulb. Let me know if you want the chaps number.where in the north do you normally go.

Some LS430 bork to report- a piddle of fuel from underneath the car reared it's head exactly 24 hours after I sold the car to a newly converted and rather unlikely Bargista- my mother!

I couldn't really play the 'sold as seen' card and tell her to 'jog on', so my mechanic poked around with a tiny camera and pin pointed a pin hole on the top of the tank around the fuel filler neck. A replacement used tank from a breaker arrived with exactly the same problem in exactly the same position. Looks to be an age related problem, and one that isn't widely documented on the net: both my car and the donor car are early examples, so looks like this could be a fairly new issue to add to the watch list.

Green '400 a couple of pages back looked great- deeply impressed with my recently acquired identical one so far.
