I know I said fuel consumption isn't important, but how bad are they?

I looked at a Corvette a few months ago. But the lefthand-drive for a big, pricey, fast car on narrow UK roads was just too risky (overtaking etc.). The new 2014 Stingray is a thing of beauty and only £55k brandnew, for another option.

OP- odd question but what do you want the car to actually do?

Are you likely going to be doing lots of track days?
will you be doing long weekend jaunts?
Whats more important- Beauty, Top speed, cornering, build quality, creature comforts?

something older like that stingray will put a smile on your face EVERY day, but it won't go as well as the modern stuff, won't be as reliable, and won't be as comfortable.

An R8 is a beautiful machine.....but it doesn't have "soul" and it doesn't create lust in its form. (I'd still love to own one, but for different reasons)

When I was 24 the only car I wanted was a Cobra.

I put a deposit down on a gardner douglas (which are just amazing vehicles)

I then went to the factory and promptly started building/buying one of these:

A gardner douglas T70 - autocar review here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JU86OBAbbo

Otherwise- how about a Weismann

For me- for a weekend car in which I'd only do a few hundred miles, at 24- I wanted something unique that turned heads for all the right reasons

Re Z06 fuel economy I believe they are very long geared and with such a large capacity engine they do sub 2,000 rpm at 70 for example and therefore you should manage approx 25-28ish cruising I would think.

Town driving....erm.....I dread to thinksmile

I am by no means an expert however, I am sure the owners forum could give far more detail on this.

It was merely to highlight something a bit different that had massive presence and a lot of performance for your budget. I reckon they would also be a really fun car to own and by all accounts they are fairly cheap to service and really reliable.

Good luck with your search

Cheers

At 24 years old with a very decent budget of £40k I would not be looking at a brand new 4 cyl Evoke!

on a run you're in mid-30s territory - booting it on the other hand.....

Jesus H Christ - I would have wet myself if I could get any of the above at 24! I thought I was doing okay buying a new Saxo VTR on finance at your age!
I'd wet myself at any of the above (or that budget) NOW and I'm twice o/p's age! well done to him though, respect (as I believe the kids say!)

No that's a very good question

I won't be doing track days
I'll do day/weekend trips up and down the country and eventually into France, Italy etc..
The list goes: beauty, build quality and interior comfort, performance/cornering, top speed
However saying that, top speed isn't important but the way it gets there is..

The car will be my only vehicle and would be favourable if it was reliable.
I can't see my self in a classic car to be honest with you, I've done that before and constantly worried about it.

As you say, he R8 is a fantastic car but I think it would leave me cold after a few months, to me it's just a big Audi. Or a small Lamborghini and I think that's the problem with it, it's just a little bit too German.

The car I want should fit this spec:
£40k maximum
Incredible place to sit, the inside is as important as the out side.
Fast, 0-62 in around 4.5 sec
I'd like a nice badge, I'm no badge snob but for my budget I'd like it none the less.
Be able to take it out for a early morning blast, then be able to point it to Monte Carlo and not feel like I've just driven all the way around the world in a van.

Last night I spent a few hours looking at 360s with a manual gearbox, but I can't help feeling this is pure madness.....?

If you can stretch to it, I would say go for a new F type. Gorgeous cars.
A new Cayman S/Boxter S?
A BMW M6? (old shape)
Wait for a BMW M4?

Have you considered a Maserati Granturismo? In price, gorgeous, capable GT car? Can be had for around the 40k mark now?

The Germans you mentioned don't do it for me at that type of money I'm afraid, I'd be after a 'toy' if you already have a co. car. And at 24 I'd be going for something a bit more mad than an Aston - I personally just find them a bit bland and they are pretty common on the roads.

Noble M400's can be had for around 40k I think.

If I was going German, the only ones that do it for me would be a 911 Turbo or a BMW 1M.

Morgan Aero 8? If you're into that kind of thing.

Also, how mad is this for 37k - MG SV-R

OP, I'm based south Manchester but we've an F-Type R Coupe coming in for trials on 24th-29th this month. Might be out of your budget for 12 months or so but ping me a PM if you fancy coming for a nose about.

If I can get the time off from work I'll pop over! I'd love to have a go in one, but my local dealer seems very reluctant to let me

I know it's not what you're after and slightly out of budget, also maybe difficult to source but an Alfa 4c.

Your depreciation will be minimal, insurance and running costs also relatively low and you'll have a warranty.
