Birthday present "what car"
Discussion
What do you really want, OP? I think you need to be honest with yourself to get the best result.
- Aston V8V: projects wealth but lacks the dynamicism of something more driver focussed
- Ferrari 360: a memorable drive and more of an occasion, but can be costly to maintain and values are very mileage sensitive
- TVR Tuscan: very similar vein to the 360
- 996/997: doesn't have the 'wow' factor of either of the above, but is more usable more of the time and depreciation is less linked to mileage
- XFR/M3/135i etc.: cars of this ilk aren't special for one off use, more above average general purpose cars. Good if you want to use every day, not so special for infrequent use.

How about a Lotus of some sort?
Exige is certainly an event..
Evora is a bit more grown up, and a better all rounder.
V8V is what I've moved to recently, and the interior, exterior looks, sound, sense of occasion are all second to none. It is not the best car for going out for a back road drive though.

Thanks for all the great advice guys.
This weekend ongoing to go over to Aston Martin in Leeds to have a look at the AM V8V and if they have one, a DB9
I'm also going to attempt to get a test drive in the ftype coupe. Obviously it's out of my price range, but I don't mind a little finance..
I think I'll have a clearer idea of what I want after doing this.
I also want to have a look at a TVR, both a Tuscan and a Cerbera, because if longed for one for quite a while but never been in a position to buy one and run it as an everyday car (no previous company car)
I have discounted a Ferrari purely on the Cost of repairs if (when) it's decides it doesn't want to work any more.
Just to add, an V8V went rumbling past me today in the high street of a very old and tight town, it put a massive smile on my face and my heart skipped a little

I bought the scooby and sold it with in a month. As fast as it was I just didn't enjoy driving it.
I didn't make a loss on the car and put the money straight back into my savings.
Iv had various jobs since I was 16 and have been saving since my very first pay cheque I was going to use the money to buy a house, but a change in circumstances means I no longer need such a big deposit.
The past fee months in my new job have really boosted my savings, hence being able to afford something a little more expensive then my last cars.

There's a rabbit off somewhere as they say in Middlesbrough.

Wow, if I were the OP I'd be keeping my 40K and sticking with the company car for a while.http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Im not quite sure how you've managed to save 40K with 3 years work, in a call centre and as a check out assistant...
but if thats the case, well done.
That's as unsurprising as the surprising fact that it took 4 pages for someone to ask "what sort of driving do you like?" rather than image or interior. That should be the first question. These what car threads seem to me mainly "Saturday night when I've had a few beers and no Petrol folk to talk to and how my minds now wandering about buying something" threads.
The problem is, by definition, a PH person should be able to decide themselves what general sort of car they want because they know the type of car they want and really at the end it is just pin pointing it down, asking for any extra issues to be taken into account. I guess that all goes on in the actual proper car threads of the forum rather than general gassing though. Ironically the OP says in his first line
"Firstly an apology. I have tried to avoid doing this for as long as possible. I know how we all love "what car" threads."
No we don't due to past experiences which yours seems now to add another to the score. Just all make believe.....
Anyhow forget that. I need a car. Can you advise which to get?
1. It must be coloured blue.
2. There are no more stipulations apart from that, until you start coming up with suggestions and then I will add another 315 other reasons why I cannot buy that.
3. I am allergic to some German paints mixed in the late 1990's, especially the blue coloured ones.,
Given that, any suggestions ?

OP, you are in a very privileged position....buy something that will stand you out from the footballers crowd and something that will be a talking point around many a dinner table for years to come, years when you can play with Astons and the like.
This is the leftfield car of choice for you sir....right color too!
You shouldn't lose too much, if any, on it either!

Another vote for a V8V from me (preferably a manual Volante).
Closely followed by a Granturismo or a 911 (997) or a 996 GT3.
How about a new Alfa 4C (or are they all sold out now)? It's certainly special and has the peace of mind of a warranty and lower running costs but perhaps the powertrain isn't special enough compared to the Aston/Maserati?
My "no guilt" purchase at 24 was a 2003 Mazda MX5, so well done, you're doing better than me!
