I'm looking into this with an open mind. I'll see how I get on. I'm reluctant to go 4pot petrol or diesel, but research suggests the 320d is quite a good engine, but will obviously not tick the 'noise' box. Mpg's appear as low on the I6's as they do on the MPS and ST though so I may have to compromise. Again. Damn this thread.
Drove a Focus Zetec today. Didn't like it much at all.
The 2.0 Diesel is a good frugal & powerful engine. However it does have it's fair share of problems and can cost a lot to fix such as the timing chain tensioner issue which is fairly widely reported.Drove a Focus Zetec today. Didn't like it much at all.

Don't bother with any BMW engine other than the inline 6 tbh, they're nowhere near as powerful yet the MPG isn't that much better. (obviously not talking the 2.0 Turbo engines etc)
3.0i NA 6 pot.
It's probably the best real-world 'normal' petrol car engine ever.
Super frugal, powerful, torquey, good sounding, reliable, light weight. The list goes on and on.
In £/mile real terms over the life of the car the mpg differential vs a diesel or some crappy smaller engined car will be irrelevant.
Just go test drive one. It'll become instantly clear.
