Detailing (or waxing the car as I call it)
Do you have a catchy description of what you'd want someone to do if you wanted to pay them to wash the car, strip all the tar off it, polish it, seal and wax it, then clean all contaminants off the wheels and reseal the finish, and make sure any brightwork, plastics, glass and rubbers were properly cleaned and treated?

Having said that, people who think detailing is just slapping some Turtlewax on grates on me a little smile
'Detailing' is another ste Americanism.
I've always called it valeting.

Reminds me of 'swap out' - just replace the knackered part FFS.

Use of the possessive as in "my bodywork guy"

Anyone who uses haters, really winds me and Mrs C up.

It is an Americanism, but to be fair when I've had valets in the past, they've just washed and waxed without polishing or paint correction and then vacuumed and shampooed the carpets and cleaned the glass.

Detailing is generally accepted to take it up a notch, particularly with paint correction work.

In Germany, most people who have a vague idea of cars actually know the numbers.
Mostly because there is no other way of describing what sort of BMW you have other than model year, which can be equally confusing.

The alternative is to do the following: "yep, my bmw 3 series (that's the one that came out after the 4 cylinder m3, and before the one that offered the 330i engine. It's the one with the most square headlights but still looks reasonably modern."

Seriously, most people on pistonheads understand model numbers. If they don't, it takes about a week for them to figure them out.

I think that this thread will quickly turn in to another place to comprehensively capture everything that anyone on Pistonheads has ever written, because every phrase or term ever used, however tongue-in-cheek, irritated someone who now feels compelled to recall and record it.

This one always crops up, I don't see how its any different to knowing any other model number of any other marque e.g Honda Civic EP3 or Jaguar XJ X308.

It's not but it crops up because BMW owners do it incessantly wink
