Have you considered a classic?

Young barman down my local had a Spitfire coupe that was effortlessly cool for a young lad.

You're unlikely to get anything really quick from the classic stable, but some 90s and early 00s coupes can be a laugh. I bought my Volvo C70 T5 when I was 21. Looks different, can burn off most cars, won't ever break and insurance isn't a killer because it's not a boy racer standard choice...

Don't suppose you live in Sheffield, talking about a barman with a Spit coupe (GT6)?

If so, it was probably my mate, though he doesn't work there (or own that car) any more...

Get a decent 90's pug. Plenty quick enough, and tremendous fun.

Decent reliability too if you ignore the "its french, it'l break down" crowd.

I realise it's a cliche now on PH but an MX5 isn't a bad shout. I bought my NB when I was 19 (or 18, can't remember!) and loved it to bits, taught me a good bit about RWD too so I haven't launched myself into a wall in my 300bhp 200SX (21 now!).

Food for thought, I never had any bad comments about mine. Had people give thumbs up, take pics(for an Mx5?!?) and on a couple occasions through town with the roof off I even had girls make nice comments while stopped at lights, which is actually a very awkward scenario unless you're a quick thinker hehe

Mine had a XXR 002 wheels, carbing roll cage, coilovers, bigger brakes from another MX5 and a full stainless exhaust with an RS*R backbox (sounded good!)

When I said a 90's pug, this is what I had in mind.

Had 4 now, , (amongst other hot pugs)

Absolutely brilliant, currently own a rallye.

Jag xj (x300) 4.0 straight 6. 240ish bhp, sounds good and much more classy than a vauxhall et al. Spend £1000 the rest on fuel and if anything goes wrong. I had one and it cost me £600 a year including breakdown cover (21 2ncb through a named driver policy).

I'm 20 and have a Porsche 924. I'd suggest you don't get a 924. People will tell you to upgrade to something decent like a 1.0 Corsa.

E36 BMWs are fairly cheap to insure now.
Could easily pick up a decent 325 or 328i for <2k.

Clio 172 or 182, just stay away from the 172 cups, the lack of abs and esp really bumps the insurance premium up for a young driver, from my experience anyway

Why buy a nineties Pug when you can buy an eighties one?

205 XS. 85bhp on the later cars in a car which weighs about the same as a pack of Post-It notes. Will be an absolute riot and cost buttons to run. Group 7 insurance, I think, so easily within your budget.

I saw a very presentable one advertised for just £500 near me - you'll never find a driveable GTi for even double that.
