The 2.5 is still a 4 cylinder - apart from the longer stoke not all that much different to the 2.0 - US market seem to love using large capacity 4s !
Ah, that I didn't know! I thought the 2.5 in the 6 was a V6. Does the current Mazda four-pot still share a block with Ford units? I've driven a few large capacity fours in the US (although obviously not this one) and they've been universally woeful. Often less powerful than the lower capacity units we get here. This one doesn't seem to be much of an exception, it's only 170bhp in the highest currently available state of tune if wikipedia is to be believed.

Skyactiv version has 184bhp/185lbft, which isn't so bad but designed for mpg & autoboxes I imagine

SkyActiv is all Mazda, right from its original design.Skyactiv version has 184bhp/185lbft, which isn't so bad but designed for mpg & autoboxes I imagine
The old MZR engine family was a shared Ford/Mazda project with Ford calling it Duratec and Mazda MZR and was a family of engines that for Mazda, spanned 1.8 to 2.5 litres (1.8, 2.0, 2.3 and 2.5)
The SkyActive engine family uses one cylinder block casting for 1.5 petrol, 2.0 petrol, 2.5 petrol and 2.2 diesel.

Sounds like Rupert Murdoch's attempt to compete with Richard Branson. Approach with caution! ....http://www.virginactive.co.uk/

With that 100mm stroke, the 2.5 is never going to give out a lot of rpm then
