The power delivery will be ridiculously uncomfortable like an on / off switch from a little 2 litre. No thanks! Bung a V8 in there. Or at the very least a supercharged V6.
I'd disagree also. I own a well prepared Mk5 Golf Pirelli that has 330bhp and it drives beautifully. The engines sound at idle is questionable (that's TFSI's for you) but on the move it's everything you want it to be.

I want one. Sounds fantastic.

Although if BMW do a full fat M2, I'd rather have one of those...

Sorry to be pedantic but those arches in the images aren't box arches.

Box arches are as featured on E30 M3, Quattro, Integrale and Nova 3dr.
Agreed. Swollen, not boxed.

Phenomenal performance. I really hope they make it. It's also nice to read through a golf thread and not see a 1001 comments on how any golf is by default dull.

Just as well the article is talking about the box arched Golf Rallye so as not to offend your pedantic ways then...

Looking forward to more news on this, though suspect it will be priced out of its own league. Hope they offer a 5-door option with rear seats (counter-intuitive!) so I can consider it.

Again I disagree, I have friends with tuned Mk2 Leon Cupra's/Cupra R's with close to 400bhp and ignoring the obvious traction issues the power delivery is very progressive. But ofcourse don't sound as good as a V still. R32 still trumps the R for sound even though its pretty much beaten everywhere else.

I doubt very much they will actually make it, limited numbers or otherwise.

I can't say that a 400 horse Golf is actually that appealing, and just because it can be done doesn't mean it should be. IMHO that's not what a Golf should be...

Realistically this would be close to if not actually £50k, and the market for a Golf at that price point is zilch.

Don't kid yourself, there are just-sub-£40k Golf R's out there.

Although not in huge numbers, a £50k 400bhp Golf will sell.

If people have bought all the 400bhp rattly old 4wd Japanese saloons for 50k the Golf would sell.

People (PHers) said the MerC A45 wouldn't sell but Ive seen a few of them kicking about. More so than the PH hero GT86

Oh I fully appreciate that, and I'm sure they could sell a few. But enough for them to make a business case, that's where I have my doubts..

Look at the 4WD 400bhp Jap-attack wagons - were they not £50k?

400bhp, £50kk, 4WD and the lure of the VAG (oo-er). The sums would work I reckon.

The business case is irrelevant, it won't need to wash its face - it's a halo product.
