Well that's sort of what I'm aiming at - Golf R due in July or so, and then maybe an S2 Elise or similar for weekend fun to go with it, though I found myself looking at 987.2 Boxsters last night on the classifieds. We'll see. Only reason I got the Golf was the lease deal to be honest - if I'd seen the M135i deals, I may already have had one of those by now!
Out of interest, what sort of deals are being offered on the two at the moment? I was tempted by the M135i when I looked before but TBH I don't actually need the practicality (especially having the Discovery) so I might as well save and buy the TVR I've been promising myself.

Of course, if the Golf is significantly more affordable, it begins to make a lot more sense.

Deals are largely gone now, but people were getting the basic R for £275 or so a month (about £1800 down) inc VAT, when an M135i was starting at more like £500 pcm with £3k down. The M was available much more cheaply a few months back though. S3 when I looked was £550 a month for the basic car or so, though I didn't look hard as I preferred the Golf. You can still get a lightly spec'd R for £350 or less a month.

Actus - what firms were doing that deal? I'd be very interested in a Golf R for £275 with £1800 down - that's a fantastic deal! This new R400 looks an absolute belter though!

This is potentially as brilliant as that 'GTE' thing featured the other day is absurd and irrelevant.

LeaseplanGo and Gateway to Lease - looooooong thread in the VW section. Deals aren't as good now, but not bad still...

Ouch.

If that's the case, the "regular" R for looks much better value. I could kind of understand if the 400 used a tuned 5-pot from the RS3 or something a little more special...but that is a lot of money for something like this.

agreed, though the price could be lower as I think his guess is purely based on being familliar with vw pricing as oppose to any whispers from above.

saying that, the last time I inquired about a car prior to official release was the limited edition evo X FQ440 and was told "less than 50k, we think" and it disappointingly turned out to be £50k exactly.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's bang on. - There are a lot of VW enthusiasts that will open their wallets without even considering anything else. Didn't someone from Mitsubishi also say they'd sold most / all of the FQ440s?

What's irritating (IMO) is that hopefully VAG have finally made a Golf-platform car handle, which should bode well for the next RS3/TT RS but they appear to be going down the route of tuning-up the EA888 rather than giving us that lovely CEPB 5-pot.

I'm a VW enthusiast and I would never pay £50K for Golf, even if it was the last one on earth.

The Germans and their pricing is ballooning out of control.

Exactly. Wasn't Harris extremely complimentary of the much more humble MK7 GTI?

I'd pay for £50k for a Golf because I look at what requirements i need from a car and base my decision on what cars can meet those requirements.

I personally don't have an issue driving a mega Golf. Mr Porsche driver might though when he gets dusted!

What's irritating is that one the one hand you are convinced the car you have not driven won't handle due to the position of it's 4 cylinder engine yet you say to improve the car the engineers should fit a 5 cylinder engine!!

edit as I was on the mobile: That's not to say that I don't agree with you Clivey, the 5 cylinder would add the extra something the Golf needs. In my world it would have a turbo'd VR6 engine but the C***S at Brussels would have a fit.

Sure. Because a guy who can afford to drive a Porsche and loves his car is going to be so upset that someone else is driving a hot hatch... Nobody spends £70k-£100k on a Porsche to be the fastest thing on the road, mostly because they aren't teenagers and have heard of the GTR.

So basically you pay £10k for some pulled out wheel arches and 100hp.

Surely the power side of things would be sorted by a remap and a few other tweaks ?

Can't see them selling well to anything other than the serious harcore golf nutters.
At least Vauxhall are being realistic with the Astra extreme, only expecting to sell no more than 50 cars.

think about how much you pay for 100bhp and wide arches with Porsche (£32,000 for +120bhp on a 911)!
