It'll sell in relatively small numbers to the hardcore VW fans, imho they have a following like Apple do and those people will lap up whatever VW serve up.

Whether anyone admits it or not, there is secretly nothing worse in car-ownership land than seeing your expensive car beaten in a race by a cheap car.

There are going to be a lot of pi**ed-off Pork, Aston and other drivers in the coming years when they watch helplessly as a lowered Golf with a Halfords-like bodykit inches past them on a dual carriageway driving
Who uses full bore acceleration on a DC in any of these cars?! If I dropped my right foot on a DC, I would be at licence-losing speeds within about 5 seconds. Get real - all of these cars have far too much outright pace for that to matter at all as contrasted to handling and the fun factor. If you want a fast car, buy a used GTR and be happy that you have pretty much the fastest thing on the road. For what that's worth!
Like it or not, people max their fast cars and bikes all the time across the UK. One sees Sunday bikers and supercar drivers every sunny weeekend doing impromptu 0-to-150 dragraces off roundabouts onto DCs.

The GTR is, indeed, a fine car, but, like the Golf, it suffers from a cheap badge. It is soul-destroying for a 100k Porker owner to be overtaken by a 50k Golf or Datsun.

Maybe for you!biggrin I am sure most drivers, like me, couldn't give a damn how fast anyone else drives (unless they get in the way or put others in danger). I can't think of a single time when I have been remotely bothered to be overtaken by anything, let alone it crushing me soul. My soul is a bit more robust than that. Maybe I just have a large penis.

I mostly drive my Discovery, which has a 0-60 time of 15.8 seconds...before off road modifications. - If I was worried about being overtaken, I'd have hung myself by now! hehe

"Sublime" handling in a Golf? Hmmm. I think that is putting it a bit high! The Golf (albeit with differences between models) generally handles about the same as a Focus or a Mazda 3 - i.e. very capably.
If you go back to the previous post that I referenced, you will find I was referring to the Panamera, a car which does handle sublimely, despite the fact that it's engine is so "poorly" positioned. eek

I see! I apologise. My bad reading skills strike again.spin

I've never driven a Pan but understand from reviews that their handling is sublime (in the truest sense of that word).

No it really isn't at all soul-destroying! And the only place I "max out" my car is on a race track. I think this Golf Evo looks like a great car - fast, fun and practical. I'd have one!

Actus - what firms were doing that deal? I'd be very interested in a Golf R for £275 with £1800 down - that's a fantastic deal! This new R400 looks an absolute belter though!
LeaseplanGo and Gateway to Lease - looooooong thread in the VW section. Deals aren't as good now, but not bad still...
Thanks Actus - looks like I've missed the boat!

You've missed the best deals for sure, though I still think it's a good price to lease a £30k car, though not perhaps the no-brainer it was when I signed.

No Oli, you're doing it all wrong. Hand in your Pistonheads membership now. This is what you want, much better starting point for a performance car and think what you could do with the £38,725 saving:

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/b...

You can even do trackdays in it 5 up with a washing machine and three King Charles Cavaliers sliding around in the boot. You know it makes sense.

So any handling improvements VW make will be offset by stretched tyres and slammed suspension from the dub scene.

What I said was that it has an inherently superior chassis. An E39 is a bloody good place to start building a performance car if that's your bag. Drop an S54 into it, stroker crank (I don't think you can bore them out as the bore spacing is already pushed to the limit), add a centrifugal supercharger... hell, even just do the last of those to any old petrol E39.

Of course, I don't actually suggest seriously that the above is a SENSIBLE alternative to a new car - just that it would drive better than an inherently compromised Haldex front-biased part-time AWD hatchback...

Don't waste your breath. - You're arguing with someone who can't confirm or deny that they're on the Haldex / VAG payroll and those who'd still defend the Golf R if it were based on a Trabant. wink

I think I might prefer a Trabant to be honest... cheap, cheerful, unpretentious and sends its puny 'power' to the correct wheels. Stick a half-decent four-stroke engine in one and I rather suspect one could have quite a lot of fun caning the arse off it.
