As many suspected the project was cancelled after the diesel scandal.

Well, no. Firstly, not remotely comparable to the emissions-smothered engines of today, which have to be refined and torquey from low down - but there has never been an I4 or turbocharged (let alone turbocharged I4) engine which I thought sounded good. You need six or twelve naturally-aspirated cylinders for a truly great sound.
No, I've heard some "good" 4-cylinders like Honda S2000s, 60s Alfa twin-cams and suchlike. They did nothing for me at all. Flat fours just sound rough to me, and the roar of a Subaru Impreza just makes me think "chav". Never heard a turbo engine I liked either. OTOH anything with six or twelve naturally-aspirated cylinders is going to make a nice sound, and I like V8s up to a point as well.
