Is it time to restrict HGV's to inside lane?

Another contribution for the embarrassing threads in the lounge, so much bks being spouted. We all share the roads, they are busy places these days and frustrating for everyone. Trucks though keep the country moving, yes there is some poor driving, there is just as much poor driving from school run mums to frantic BWM owners trying to make their next appointment.
We have enough rules on the roads already though, many of which are ignored, mainly because they are fking stupid and knee jerk. Introducing more stupid restriction will not help anybody and will only result in a further revenue gathering exercise for the treasury on the odd occasion they decide to have a clamp down, that clamp down mainly invoked due to being short on the fines target for that month.

nice to see a fair few on here do see the bigger picture and that not all the car driving population hate us.
as for goverment money making schemes, I wonder how many here are aware of the driver cpc we now have to complete?
Its been phased in over the last 5 years, and all 5 modules must be completed by September this year.
its basically to prove we are capable of still doing the job, rules, regulations etc. Some of it has been handy as abit of a refresher, but alot of it can be abit like sucking eggs.
but heres where it gets farcical, at the end of each module, there is no test or exam to complete or pass, and there is nothing to stop you doing the exact same module 5 days running
almost makes it sound like a Westminster piggy bank.

Abnormal loads travel at night perhaps?
Maybe the geriatric item of rolling stock is not fit to be moved on the railways?
New trains are delivered this way aswell.Maybe the geriatric item of rolling stock is not fit to be moved on the railways?
I know moves of really big stuff is planned in advance, but unsure how they work the timings, like most things in haulage though, I wouldn't mind betting the main factor is cost.
luckily for me, the type of haulage I work in mainly moves through the night, and 80% of it is in europe.
I seriously think I'd struggle to just do day work on the trucks now, especially in the uk which now has 1 of the lowest standards of driving I see in europe.
not sure if still the case, but in the philippines they were restricted to using the roads between 8 pm and 8 am.from a personal point of view hgv drivers appear to me to be amongst the most aware on the roads up here ,i have yet to have one pull out in front of me yet it has happened twice in the last days by a member of the blue rinse brigade.
A few hours up the A1 today and every single tail back was caused by a lorry overtaking another lorry at 3mph. I understand they need to be on the road but at peak times they should be limited to lane one. Or at least spend some of our tax making one of the busiest, most well used roads abit wider!

I think it's time we widen some of our motorways. I'd be for this as a temporary measure, or using the hard shoulder as a live lane, but we need more capacity on some stretches.
They've done this on the m62, it's awesome. Transformed it from hateful to the best, free flowing section of the commute. With regards lorries, most are good, but some are st drivers. This is exactly the same with car drivers. People make mistakes - some horrifically so.
Agree the 50 average zones are really dangerous and at times downright scary.
If you put all the lorries into lane one though, you'd never get off the motorway. :s
Sorry don't have a proposed solution, so not a great post. Better freight train links perhaps to reduce the numbers on the roads? In fact, better rail all round might be the answer...

This video modified my attitude towards them. I nearly had my PJ squashed by one moving back in to lane 1 on me a couple of weeks ago. I was fuming. That particular driver was an ass, but that doesn't change the fact that we need to understand and drive accordingly.

Or alternatively they could just switch off the restrictors
^^^This^^^I spend a huge amount amount of time in the USA and the much vaunted Interstate system is pretty much a dual carriageway.
Trucks there are unrestricted and have the power to overtake whatever they want and quite happily roll along at whatever the speed limit is. Mostly 75mph in Texas.
It is super rare to get held up by "elephant racing" anywhere.
In anticipation.......
No, you don't see more accidents
Yes, I have got an HGV license and have driven one over there
What I'm saying is that it's a stupid law because we have trucks at 56 and cars at 70+
If the trucks could do the same speeds, there would be virtually no hold ups.
