So I'm going to need some new rubber, in the sizes 275/35/18 rear and 245/40/18 front. Uniroyal are the cheapest non-ditchfinders in these sizes, I was pleased with the RainExperts I had on a previous car and they seem to be a well respected brand. They don't make a Rainsport 3 for the rears so I'll have to get the Rainsport 2s. However, for the fronts the Rainsport 3s are £96 vs £151 for Rainsport 2s. So I was thinking of getting the 3s for the rear and 2s for the front. Obviously it's best practice to get the same all round but a premium of over £100 seems a lot of extra money I needn't spend, especially considering one is just (I believe) a newer version of the other. The car is a Jaguar S-type and isn't used for anything too strenuous, but I am a bit of a ride and handling geek! Thoughts?

TLDR; would you have a problem with running Rainsport 3s front but Rainsport 2s rear?

Not at all, as long as the tyres match on the same axle.

edit: nm, seems you are changing all 4 at the same time.

Ok ok, I've run plenty of mismatched ditchys in my time, even on my "OMG-widowmaker-deathrap" MR2, without dying to death. In flames. But my point is, is it more the £100 "worse" in terms of how it'll make the car behave (e.g. due to differing responses, slip angles, etc)? Will the car feel much different to having the same (it'd have to be RS2s in that case) all round?

In short it will be fine. Those are good tyres too, got em on the GFs s2000 and I really rate them especially in the wet.

Tyreleader have got the RS2 fronts for £110 delivered, or £112 for XL. You would obviously have to pay for fitting on top.

PS - I'd want the same all round when buying a new set of four, it would annoy me otherwise.

You'll be OK. Uniroyal are Continental, anyway, hardly a company famous for ditchfinders.

Can't say in surprised with all the wailing on here about tyres..

It's enough to worry most people.

I've got Michelins on the front and dunlops on the rear of my Quattro.

I expect the transmission to explode in about three miles

Not true.

Uniroyal is part of Michelin, who also have an interest in BF Goodrich.

Great shout. Problem solved

N.B. I only checked Camskill and Blackcircles - they always used to be the two cheapest places.

They're part of Continental AG. Unless you've been reading about the Uniroyal Tire Company in America on Wikipedia.

Have a look at the name next to the copyright logo at the bottom of this page.

Not quite. Uniroyal sold their European interests to Continental before Michelin acquired their US business. So you are actually both correct!

Don't you like Michelin? The Rainsports are made by Uniroyal Europe and are part of the Conti group.

No input from Michelin AFAIK.
