Dont some flojet water cutting machines use gallons of it?
I also know a milk delivery company who still use the old style electric milk floats who buy it in bulk

No No No - A water "softener" replaces calcium salts in the water with sodium salts - so no good at all as a substitute for deionised or distilled water. If you have a water softener on your incoming main then you also need a separate (ie not through softener) drinking source, and I'd advise caution because the sodium salts now in your water may wreck the heat exchanger in your boiler.

Okay, I know this is picky but it's water, steam and then condensate

and don't drink it, it's not good for you, seriously we need the minerals in it
