Is distilled/deionised water a scam?

Probably. Rainwater also would be better than hard tap water.
Have a look at water softeners. Cheap, reliable, and they work.
No No No - A water "softener" replaces calcium salts in the water with sodium salts - so no good at all as a substitute for deionised or distilled water. If you have a water softener on your incoming main then you also need a separate (ie not through softener) drinking source, and I'd advise caution because the sodium salts now in your water may wreck the heat exchanger in your boiler.Have a look at water softeners. Distilling the water (boiling it, condensing then collecting the steam) removes the ions as they remain in the boiling water
Okay, I know this is picky but it's water, steam and then condensate and don't drink it, it's not good for you, seriously we need the minerals in it
