Thinking of getting rid of my a3 1.9tdi which sounds like a taxi for something more sporty on the ears. e46 m3 springs to mind, but i'm guessing the running costs/ownership maybe hard on the wallet.

any ideas?

8k buys a lot of interesting metal.

Any other requirements?

Pretty much anything with in excess of four cylinders and a custom exhaust.

Monaro, 5.7 litre V8. Should meet your sound requirements smile

Honda S2000 with a VTEC howl is best-in-class at that pricepoint.

I doubt you'd routinely achieve 30MPG though.

I'd be wary of that Starter motor noise. That sounds like it would be a nightmare of a job if it does need replacement.

Are you kidding? Best sound for £8k? The best sound will definitely not be from a 4cyl engine, and that comes from a Honda fan...

VTECs make a beautiful noise. Easily as pleasing to the ear as the cheap, nasty or old V6/8 motors mostly found at the 8k level.

Leggy E46 M3 would be my vote for something you might conceivably buy for under 8k that would sound the best. I wouldn't though, but that's my engine choice.

30MPG Combined will probably limit your options just a bit.

V6 Alfas and Straight 6 BMW's will get close, plenty about. How about a nice E46 330Ci ?

156 GTA's are much more pricey than I expected!

£8k will get you some fantastic sounding machinery. Few, if any, will return 30mpg combined though.

If you can drop to mid, or even high, 20's it'll open up your options a lot more.

Depends on the type of driving. It's pretty easy to get 25 out of one if you don't hoof it everywhere.

I think he knows exactly what he's saying wink

We all love the sound of 6 or 8 cylinders, but the sound of a 4 cylinder engine can be great also. Hell, touring cars sound great dont they?

You say no to an S2000 as "will definitely not be from a 4cyl" as if they all sound drab like a slow revving 2.0 8 valve from the 90's. On your logic a Ferrari 458 and a corvette ZR1 should sound the same because they are both v8's?

Nonsense.

(That said, my pick would be a good condition 156 GTA smile)

The noise is a big part of the reason I bought my 156 GTA biggrin I don't think that anything comes close without spending rather a lot more money!

That Sportwagen linked above looks lovely, and has already had the Q2 diff and a fruitier exhaust fitted...

Edit: Not 30 mpg though, maybe on a long and sensible motorway drive but that somewhat defeats the object! Low-mid 20's average.
