Nissan 350z makes a great noise, although only two seats and averaged only 24mpg mixed driving in one.

Or BMW Z4 Coupe, maybe a M5….

Honda S2000 with a VTEC howl is best-in-class at that pricepoint.
Yep, A S2000 or maybe a DC5??
Are you kidding? Best sound for £8k? The best sound will definitely not be from a 4cyl engine, and that comes from a Honda fan...
VTECs make a beautiful noise. Easily as pleasing to the ear as the cheap, nasty or old V6/8 motors mostly found at the 8k level.
Do you even know what you are saying?
I think he knows exactly what he's saying wink

We all love the sound of 6 or 8 cylinders, but the sound of a 4 cylinder engine can be great also. Hell, touring cars sound great dont they?

You say no to an S2000 as "will definitely not be from a 4cyl" as if they all sound drab like a slow revving 2.0 8 valve from the 90's. On your logic a Ferrari 458 and a corvette ZR1 should sound the same because they are both v8's?

Nonsense.

(That said, my pick would be a good condition 156 GTA smile)

Yeah, honda vtec's sound ok when up over 6k rpm, but obviously economy suffers. They sound pretty plain at ordinary speeds, so you wouldn't get a decent sound and 30mpg. At least with a six cylinder engine, they sound lovely even when pottering around.

Cant argue there. That's a fair point, and its well made.

I love the sound of the straight six engines in the BMW's. Iv'e driven an E46 330ci, it sounded great and was more than powerful enough to have fun. A mint one could be had for this money, if 5 seats are not essential a good Z4 could be had too.

For £8k he could get a 1 series or an e90 3 series. They have the updated 265bhp (3 series somtimes has slightly less pre 07) engine which is slightly better on fuel too.

Although I like the sound, my argument would be that they are indistinguishable from pretty much any other turbo impreza?

If hes interested more in noise than performance why not get a turbo 2000?

What about a Golf R32? They sound great standard and fantastic with an after market exhaust. It should get fairly close to 30MPG average!

No, I think he is saying that an s2000 would sound better than any 'old' V6 or V8 you could pick up for £8k.

I'm saying that is absolute rubbish.

I thought it was a valid opinion.

To be fair there are different ways of sounding nice. A big v8 roar is great, but often can be slow revving and less tuneful (plenty of volume though)

Some people would prefer the quick revving nature of a VTEC engine that hits 9000 rpm

As said before, an S2000 wouldn't be my choice, but to write off so many cars purely because they are 4 cylinder would be ridiculous.

No impreza will get you 30mpg combined - not even the NA ones.

On that note - never saw the point in buying a non-sti one since theyre just as expensive to run and dont go as fast.

If I really wanted noise id go with 350z and bugger the mpg

Or

A 300zx and bugger the mpg further. Those things sound incredible with the right "alterations"

Golf r32 does sound awesome, but 30mpg would be a struggle. My vote would be for a 330ci, it can easily do 30mpg on a run and looks and sounds good.

Any Alfa with a V6 Busso. My money would go on as good a GT 3.2 as you can afford. No 6 cylinder sounds better. And, yes, I include ze Germans in that opinion.

Bmw 130i with both tailpipes open (plugged vacuum pipe) sounds wonderful.
You'll get30 mpg with a bit of motorway driving now & then
