Left the car with a female friend for a week, came back to a large dent in the rear quarter. "It'll pop out". Seething.

I've never had anything like this before, is it repairable? And how much will it cost? I see lots of cars with really ropey repairs to large dents, so I'm pretty concerned!

As above, probably £400-£600 if you don't have trade contacts and depending on where you go.

It won't "pop out", it needs filling and painting, it's a proper bodyshop job I'm afraid.

"seething" is an understatement if that had happened to my car.

How did it happen?

Ouch. I'm going to guess that was caused by reversing into a bollard in a car park.

Looks like it was a post or bollard. Wouldn't insurance quote to change the quarter panel? Bodyshop would just 'pull' the majority of the damage then dress it and repaint.

If you get an 'insurance quote' for that repair it will be fairly massive, because they'd aim to replace a large section of the rear wing and then spray-in the bumper (perhaps even the boot) to match

That said, it just might be "locally repairable" - the problem with that sort of repair is they're labour intensive and the quality of the result is very much down to the skill of the repairer - oh, and 'bodge' and 'filler' ;0

That also assumes there's no damage we can't see (I'm assuming that is a further dent I can see over the rear arch - e.g. the panel has 'crumpled'? Do you have a pic from the opposite angle?) If that was a bollard, the rear bumper has been bent-in quite a bit - that will need to be checked underneath for damage too.

I'd say she is going to owe you many hundreds of pounds for the repair, a few days of car hire and you need to choose a decent bodyshop to do this because you don't want a bodge - especially on that colour.

When you collect it, you want to pay special attention to

- overspray in the rear arches/around the suspension (sign of a sloppy job - frankly)
- the finish around the edges of panel/arch (dead giveaway for such repairs - would devalue the car in future)
- the paint match across the panels in bright, dull and artificial light (I guarantee it will show in one of those unless you went to the best place possible)

and don't lend her anything again because I'd like people to take care of things I lend them and she didn't.

or is this another of those "friend" threads?

On a serious note though i hope it gets repaired to a very good standard as per the posts above.

What a bummer.

If that is to be repaired to an insurance approved standard, you're looking at £1,200 at least in my opinion, more if the bumper won't repair. Yes, it could be done for less, but...

its not going to be a cheap fix but that doesnt matter if she's paying for it.

Your friend has done that to your car and she is being all casual about it?

BJ or full on sex plus reimbursement of repair costs would be the only thing to repair this friendship if you ask me.

For a quick (cheap) repair circa £300.... For this expect the bumper to be blown in, maybe a slight colour mismatch, plenty of filler and maybe some overspray.

For circa £500-£600 expect the above but the bumper blended, possible rear wing sprayed and door blended, limited filler and no overspray (the overall finish will depend on the skill of the panel beater/paint).

For near circa £1k+ expect a replacement panel and all the paint that goes with it.

Personally if it was my car I'd find a decent body shop to replace that section of the panel especially as it wasn't you who did it.

For a decent repair job non main agent expect to pay around £450 - 500. That's a fair price for labour and paint and materials. When repaired make sure the full rear wing is painted even down to the screen pillar and check that the full rear bumper is done and not faded in half way across. Check, if fitted, the pdc sensors and be equally keen for imperfections in the paint, overspray and signs of repair marks (sinkage). Accidents happen but if repaired properly you and no one else should be able to notice.
Good Luck.
