Join up mumsnet and tell them you dislike children. That would be as much help as your post here.

Why the dislike for BMWs? What's wrong with their 6 cylinder engines?

What do you drive out of curiosity? It must be good.

Too many people seem to "dislike" other cars based on what they own. It just often seems like a need to justify their choices rather than an impartial opinion.
I don't dislike BMWs at all, I am actually on my third and all three have been inline 6 cylinder engines. The current car is a 535d and yes, it is quite good, thanks for asking.

Have you got any other assumptions you would like to make about me?.

OP asked for thoughts on the car in question and I gave mine. Had he specified that he only wanted to hear complimentary things my reply would have been very different. rolleyes

Not at all, I may have felt that way if the OP had stated he was only interested in thoughts that supported his own.

I have to ask this I'm afraid: What on earth is there to NOT like about a petrol inline six, and why explicitly petrol you dislike? Do you like diesel straight six's? I'd have to say that a good straight six is probably the best configuration you can get in my mind.
As you asked, the thing I don't like about inline petrol sixes is they are too smooth almost to the point of lacking any character. I would much rather a V8 if I was having petrol.

Yes, I do like diesel inline 6s, I have owned two and really enjoy the power delivery and engine/exhaust note.

I'm afraid I will have to disagree with you on I6 being the best engine configuration, whether petrol or diesel.

Of course this, and anything else I have written in this thread, is just personal opinion.

You make a fair point and you are certainly welcome to it. However, what started as a thread on a particular car now had the risk of turning into another petrol vs diesel debate (please no!).

Back to the thread - I think I may have a look at this one, a 2004 E46 M3 and 2004 E46 330ci tomorrow in convertible flavour as I just don't know.

When I thought about it, since you never ruled out RWD I guessed it would be a 35d.

They spend far too long knocking other BMWs on the forums I use. Like to jump in telling everyone the issues with other BMW models, often the 335i and M3s and fail to notice their own.

They spend 2 years telling everyone how great the 35d is and how nothing comes close.

Two years later they buy a 35i, M135i or an M3 and suddenly tell us how much better it is than the 35d engine.

If you need to own a large motorway crusing car, it is clear why a little sports car doesn't fit your needs.

You just came across as a little bitter/jealous.

The OP asked opinions of the car, he didn't ask you to justify why it doesn't suit you, which clearly it doesn't as you've got a completely different car.

The Z4 is a good little car and the engine is a cracker. Far more fun and character than you get from a 35d. There is little argument in that.

I ran a z4 3.0si coupe for over 5 years and loved it.

The engine is great. Keep up the search!

Also ditch the run flats if they haven't been already - Goodyear eagle F1 Asymetric 2 or michelin pilot supersport are the best tyres to get on instead and make a massive difference to the ride and handling.
