I have literally just sold mine.

I am struggling with what to replace it with, planning on spending 15k or so, but really cant see myself in anything that i like right now for that money.

I laughed that i might just buy a CS in a difference colour........ its actually making more sense now.

Thanks leins. If you look on eBay someone is advertising this service.

Yeah, that's where I looked as mine needs doing. I haven't gone into it yet, but these seem legit.

Audi do the RS4, Merc the C63. I reckon it would sell quite well.
Technically, they did make *an* E46 M3 Touring...

People often say "BMW missed a trick not building an M3/5 Touring" of a given generation where it is absent. However, when they do, they sell in tiny numbers relative to the saloons. ALPINA who also produce high performance BMW based vehicles, offer them usually in all body styles - the Touring is invariably a tiny seller, often a single UK example.

The E46 M3 is a great all round package and the OP's is a lovely combination. Personally I'm more aggrieved they never made an E46 M3 saloon, again though by numbers sold when they have been available, they're a minority choice. It'll be interesting to see how the present M3/M4 split affects that historic trend...

Clearly BMW didn't make a touring because they didn't think it would sell in sufficient numbers to justify the development expense. However, that doesn't mean it's not a shame; the 3-series "coupe" body shape has very little appeal to me - it just seems to be impractical for the sake of being impractical.

I had no problem loading my twins in the back, or fitting a weeks worth of holiday stuff in the large boot of my e92 M3... God only knows why people think they need so much space?

So what's the advantage in the two-door body shell over the four or five door ones? It's no stiffer, it's not significantly lighter... as far as I can see it's pretty much 100% style over substance.

I suppose it's no different to three-door hatchbacks, but I've never understood them either.

Agreed. The 4 series we had for a week was massive but a complete PITA with kids.

Yes, it's 100% style over substance. People who say the 4 door, or even more hilariously the estate looks better say that because their wife made them buy it wink

Jag XF Sportbrake, BMW 3 series Touring, Merc C class, Honda Accord and many others all look MUCH better as an estate.

The new M3 looks better than the M4, many think the 5 door M135i looks better than the 3 (although that's not saying much…).

In terms of E9x M3s, I vastly prefer the saloon. No wife, kids, dog or need for practicality to inform the choice either. So :P

Or maybe they just have a different opinion to you?

I prefer the two door E46 to the four door, but I think the estate is better looking than either. With the E9x, I think the estate is best looking and the "coupe" worst looking by some margin. The E92 is a shocking ugly car, to my eye.

Both are ugly as sin.

Estates are for windows cleaners or part time handy men wink

If the masses thought they were better looking then we would see more of them on the road over saloon or coupe body types. But we don't, do we...

Is that relevant? If you choose you cars based on what "the masses" like, that's fine. Personally, I don't. smile

I don't.
Yes I do, all the time. Like my current car - they are everywhere and everybody loves them.

I was using 'the masses' to make a point and illustrate consensus of opinion. A bit like what the car makers do to determine what they put into production.

Oh I agree entirely. Most people prefer the two-door cars and that's why that's what BMW make. I certainly can't fault BMW for it their choice - they exist to make a profit not to make cars that I like. For me though, the two-door version of these compact execs is always just a bit... sad, I suppose.

Like a balding fat middled aged man who's desperately to try to follow modern youth fashion in the mistaken belief that it'll make him "cool". hehe

ETA: The E46 M3 is still a damned fine car though. It would just, for me, be far better with the estate body shell.

A diesel Mundano and a an old Impreza covered in wings.

Yep, you are perfectly well qualified to judge a car's looks… jester

Exactly my point - thanks. I don't really car about peoples opinions, or more precisely, what the masses are up to.

Do you really think owning a coupe compares to that? I mean, like, really think that? hehe
