Used Prius are the the cabbies motor of choice. They don't run them for no reason. Bargains at the moment are the previous gen Auris hybrid. Same hybrid tech as the Prius, but a better chassis and driving dynamics. They are pretty undervalued in the trade and as a result are a used bargain. Learn to drive them properly and the mpg is good, drive them like a normal auto and you won't get the best economy. Use the power button coming out of junctions and for any acceleration, then get up to speed and maintain it. The batteries, not the engine will give you the speed you need. This way you'll do loads more mpg's. Toyota hybrid's are cheap to buy as used cars and are massively reliable, there's very little to go wrong. A Jazz simply will not give you the same space, economy or running costs over a decent period of time. Oh, and ignore Vladimir, he's just being an irritable tw@.

I don't even know what car you have. I have no intention of even checking. That's how wound up I am by your vacuous drivel. Still if it makes you feel better, do carry on.

If I get any more wound up, I may even stop snoring.

or over discharging - I suspect you'd want to avoid any hybrid that had sat idle for too long
Li-XX is the one that gets killed by over-discharging. I've got a bunch of 10-cell NiMH packs that work fine after having sat on the shelf for five years, following three or four years of irregular use. Three times round on the cycler and they were back to where they were when I put them away.
and NiMH - A complete discharge of a battery can result in one or more cells going into polarity reversal,.

"May" not "will".
One cell may discharge completely and go into polarity reversal is it's of significantly lower capacity than the others in a series-connected pack and driven into reversal by the rest continuing to provide power at significant current, i.e. when the vehicle is in use. That's not relevant in the case you were taking about: batteries being left unused for significant periods of time, when there is no current being driven through any potentially weak cell.

Surprised you didn't drop in a comment about either your 'supervan' or the 'junior supercar'

Tragic. You. Are.

To answer the original question, yes I would, I love them.

[I recognise I'm in a huge minority on PH ... rolleyes ]

Not as economical as the official figures state though, and as mentioned above the initial take off is slow for a second or two unless you prime the petrol engine to start first.

When I drove one, the seats were a bd hard as hell and not particularly supportive. That's pretty much all of what I remember of it! Neither good nor bad.

I quite liked the silent battery mode at low speed, very cool. Ive been haven't some serious want for the Panamera hybrid, 91mpg and 70co2...

Right, let's sort out a few myths and truths shall we...

'The Prius high voltage battery won't last 100,000 miles'.... bks!!! The high voltage battery in the Prius is ultra reliable and is capable of well in excess of 200,000 miles +

'A replacement battery for a Prius will cost thousands of £££'.... Again, bks!!! You can get a replacement battery fitted for less than a grand, that's IF it ever goes wrong which is unlikely!

'Prius's are slow and dangerous'.... Partially bks!!! Ok so the Prius isn't going to set any land speed records of course but it isn't as slow as people think. It has about the same acceleration as a 1.6 petrol engine. Also, it has 100% torque available from standstill and will get up to 30mph quicker than a lot of small cars which is handy at roundabouts etc.

'If you drive a Prius you are a green peace loving tree hugger'.... bks!!! I got my Prius as cheap, safe and reliable transport. I couldn't care less about how green it is. I enjoy the fact it gets 100 miles to a tenner of fuel, but if it had a plume of black smoke coming out the back then I'd still be happy!

'Prius's are expensive to maintain due to the hybrid system'....bks!!! The hybrid system only has 3 moving parts in it so not much to go wrong. My annual service at a Toyota dealer costs me £120!

Sooo, as you can tell I drive a Prius.... (Insert p1ss takes here.....I've heard em all before!)

It's a 58 plate and has covered 78,000 miles. There isn't a speak anywhere in it. I got one because it suited my circumstances at the time. It's only a tenner road tax, £197 a year to insure and gets me 600 miles from a 45L tank of mixed driving. As a family car, I cannot fault it. The hybrid systems works silently in the background, the cvt transmission is a bit naff admittedly, however it is very relaxing to drive. I find it quite difficult to get comfy in the seat, could do with more bolster support. It's an excellent cruiser and comes with all the toys as standard. I average mid 50's mpg wise. Yes I know some diesels can match and better that but then again this wasn't the price of a diesel! It has been utterly reliable, not a single thing has gone wrong! It's the most reliable car I've ever owned. To get the best economy you do have to make sacrifices like the pulse and glide method and over inflate the tyres, but thats only for hardcore hypermilers. The ride is comfy although a bit wallows around corners.

If you want an honest family car then you can't go wrong with one. Forget all the bull st stigma that's attached to them from people that have never actually driven one. They only listen to what clarkson has to say and think it's gospel!

Ps; mine will be for sale next month when my company car comes ha!

Mostly right.

No it doesn't, only from the electric motor. The petrol often isn't there at all from standstill.

the cvt transmission is a bit naff admittedly

No it isn't because it doesn't have a cvt transmission, it has an epicylic differential instead.

I don't understand the animosity that the Prius attracts on here, I assume it's some sort of "fit in with the crowd" thing. It's just a mid-sized Toyota hatchback, there's nothing remotely offensive about it.

Exactly. It's no worse than most run of the mill cars and a little quirky into the bargain.

The thread says "Prius, would you?"
I said No I wouldn't.
Not saying I like any other euro box either.
Personally I don't care about economy or MPG. I buy older, cheaper cars so have saved my money there. I then get to smile when I drive to work.

Er, yes it does. Or as Toyota would call it - ECVT
