A Suzuki Swift Sport was the first car I bought (at the grand old age of 21)for the same reasons that the OP mentioned. It's a fun little thing, quick enough to excite but not too fast that insurance companies start to shaft you. You can even get some pretty decent lift off oversteer if you're particularly commited! As I already mentioned, the cost of insurance is low, I paid £600 with 0 NCB, with a sub £500 renewal.

I kept mine for around 18 months and I liked it so much that I persuaded my girlfriend to buy it off me around 4 months ago. The only thing the Swift cost me (or her in fact) is the regular maintenance any car would need.

Just for reference, I changed mine for a MK3.5 MX5 due a change in financial position and the fact that I still have access to the aforementioned semi-practical car for the times when we need to take luggage to the airport/family need a lift etc. If you want any information, www.ssoc.co.uk is a pretty good resource - I found it very useful when buying/owning mine.

As someone three years your senior and having had the privilege of enjoying some fine metal in my time, there are a few things you need to set straight for yourself first.

The most important thing at our age (young-20s) - a house. It's fine throwing away a few quid behind fancy cars at a young age - realistically it's the only time you have to enjoy them - once houses, marriage and kids come along, cars take a bit of a back seat. I can almost guarantee that the older PH folks here will prioritise against cars as, honestly, it's just a hobby.

That said - with your excess money, can you realistically afford to piss that up the wall on a fancy car if you need to buy a house in the next two years? Doesn't sound like anything important at 20 but put it this way - by buying a house you can save enough on mortgage vs rent in order to have 20% more money actually available to play with.

I know how hard-headed a 20 year old is (hell, it's only been three years, for a lot of PH folks that's nearly 5% of their lifetime :P) but just use your head. PM me if you want a bit more advice. There's a lot to be gained by biding your time, and nothing to be gained by spunking your money early just because you have it.

There's a popular saying in the professional world; "slowly slowly, catchy monkey". Except in this case the monkey is a Skyline.
Best post I've read in ages. Wish I'd taken this advice when I was 20.

Susuki looks ace in black BTW.
Thanks, it was a toss up between red and black. The low milage and close distance of the seller made the decision for me!

You pretty much summed up my thought process there. It's a good laugh, and keeps me out of trouble mostly.
I've been on SSOC, seems ok. Not the best because I don't share many swift owners urge to modify my car! Still, they seem like a friendly bunch.
I would LOVE an MX5, definitely going to be getting a two seater next biggrin

Best get some sleep, got the 'pleasure' of driving 100 miles in a hired Vauxhall Mokka tomorrow. Yay.
