Got to move later this year which means a 100 mile round trip for the Frau. She wants a car that will be super-economic and can carry a Spaniel, preferably in the boot as opposed to the rear seats. Budget about £5k. I was thinking of Golf/1 Series/A3 but can't think beyond those really. Any other ideas anyone?

Go lower down the VAG group. A Skoda Fabia estate has a huge boot.

X Type, I've had three, brilliant cars for the money.

From the title I thought you had a dog that commuted! Would have loved to see that!

Skoda seems a good bet as stated above, or as an alternative a Renault Clio Estate 1,5dci ?

Cheers chaps. I quite like the idea of the X Type but she won't, she'll just say it's too big. She's also not had her licence that long so we need to keep those costs down too. Clio and Skoda look promising though.

The X type isn't really that big though if your significant other says no then fair enough. They are as practical as a Mondeo (that they are based on) and have similar running costs but with Jaguar refinements. I can't see past them.

Good luck with your search.

Cheers. I agree with you though, good value all things considered but I have a hard time trying to get her to drive our 3 Series Touring, drives me nuts. At the moment she's fixated on a Fiat 500 but she'll not get one of those for under £5k nor will she get a Spaniel in the boot.

Focus Estate. Petrol or diesel depending on how many miles you do smile

I wouldn't go down the one series route. The boot isn't very big.

most cars can have the rear seats folded, so if she's happy to do that she could get the spaniel in the boot of practically anything.....

Forester or Impreza - not so economical, but can get a decent one for under budget and spend the rest on additional fuel. Octavia estate is a good bet tho.

Some good ones there, cheers. I guess the other constraint is size, she won't drive anything 'big' like our 3 Series Touring so the V50 is out for example. It's annoying because some of them would really fit the bill to. I'm liking the sound of Skodas though, I'd never really considered them before. Focus would suit but I think she finds them a bit meh and would rather have something a bit more funky, if that's the right word.

I'm looking for a similar car at the moment for my wife (although it would be new) and really rated the Skoda Estate when we looked at it this weekend. The boot was huge and only slightly smaller than my 5 series estate (sorry, 'Touring' for the BMW fan boys smile)

It's a car with a compact footprint but big on the inside - we just need a second car for 2 young kids and dog (Labrador) transport.

I think we will be going the Seat Ibiza estate route though as my wife prefers the looks. Not sure if they are £5k or less yet but again, a suitable car.

Good luck.

Looks a peach, and the seller is utterly genuine.

That's about the most honest ad I've seen anywhere. That would fit the bill perfectly, top spot. I'll show it to the Frau and see what she thinks.
