What 'Hot Hatch' For Less Than £1500?
Discussion
Got to be a puma, for me personally I can't find a more perfect car, I can fit me and my three kids inside if the wife has the volvo, I use it to go to work an back, usually down back roads to which it does 35+ mpg, admittedly the rust does bother me but there are ways to sort it, pug 206 front arches iirc, plus I think it is a lovely looking car

I paid £350 for a 1.7, 78,000, one owner 2000 model last month and it is just superb. Fast, handles beautifully, great gearbox, roomy, looks great, does 40mpg and the parts are as cheap as chips. I don't think there is anything better out there for under £500.So OP. Spend £500 on a Puma, £400 getting the arches done PROPERLY and put the remaining £600 in your bank
Mint Xsara VTS and some go faster bits. Same as the 306 GTI 6 but not as desirable due to a face problem.

As suggested a 306 gti6 or 2.0 16v xsi would be a good choice and £1500 is plenty for a good one. Alternatively a pre 01 xsara vts will hand both of the above their arses and be in budget but not as pretty.
Considering a Xsara VTS is a Gti-6, but with an inferior gearbox and softer suspension, I very much doubt it Pebbles167 said:

Gti6 box is a mess compared to a vts box I should know I've owned enough of each!As pentoman says the warm versions tend to be tidier cars as they are not as desirable as it's hot cousin. This why I owned my last vts as every gti6 that was in my budget was a hound and had wrecked seats cluncky boxes and a whole host of other problems, the vts was ugly but once behind the wheel I didn't care as I was a hoot to drive!
....... not as much fun or as fast round the bends as my puma though!

Monaco blue 172 - only made 400 odd in that colour so its rare. Its also a lovely colour
Do not under any circumstances buy a 1500quid impreza - best case youll end up with something thats ruinously expensive to run and not fast/fun enough to make up for it. If youre going to buy one go for a proper sti and dont skimp on the purchase price.

(nice looking xsi by the way)
Many say the 5 speed is better, but I think more would agree the 6 speed is. I've owned several pugs, My first 6 speed was excellent, much better than the 5 speed.
Ill agree on the warm ones ie: XSI often being tidier, they can make similar power to a 6 with a few mods, as can the XU7 1.8 engine. (Albeit with an awesome alloy block!!)
Don't forget the rallye's too! They can sometimes be had cheap, here is mine!

There's nothing wrong with a £1500 Impreza IMO. Only expensive to run if you spend more than you need to, other than fuel, which is a bit of a hit. To say they aren't fast enough is nonsense!Do not under any circumstances buy a 1500quid impreza - best case youll end up with something thats ruinously expensive to run and not fast/fun enough to make up for it.
