No wonder people opt for budget, even though it's potentially false economy, when mid range stuff can be £120 to £150 per corner... Had me looking at the cheapies as well. Maybe two premium on the back and two budgets up front is ok?

When 19" wheels started seeming like a sensible thing to have on a 4 banger diesel family saloon?

My Volvo T5 is less than £100 a corner for Pirelli P Zeros or Goodyear Eagle F1s.

I just paid £139/corner (I think) for 245/40R18 Michelin Pilot Super Sports online.

What sizes of tyre are you looking for where mid-range tyres exceed that?

At least it means if you've been buying 19" tyres since 2010 (like me) they've gone from £235 to £175 for the same brand, because they have got so much more common.

Doesn't sound like a good idea, I'd rather have decent part-worn tyres all round.

Yet another great reason to be on 16" wheels.

Good point. I went over to my local tyre place a couple of weeks back to see if they had any part worns in 15 inch flavour. They stated they don't even bother keeping 15s on the shelf any more (they'd have to be ordered in specially!). Most of his work is 17s and above (with the occasional "older" car on 16s).

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 won the Evo Mag tyre test last year and don't seem too bad on price eg just over £100 per tyre for 18's.

Do you never drive in he rain or think you'll make an emergency stop.
But I presume you were joking, being such a long standing PH member.

Commonality has a lot to do with it.

My DC5 has a standard size of 215/45/17, certain ranges don't come in that size and are more expensive if they do.

However the rim takes 225/45/17 and in that you get Bridgestone and Yokohama Advan AO80R's for £120 a corner and Bridgestone RE070's for £80 a corner.

The 225 size is standard audi A3 rim size.

So best bet is don't get the flash optional rims, but as has been said 19" as standard is bananas

My Leon has 225/45/17's. Just put two Goodyear Eagle F1's on at £113.00 each fitted and balanced.

If they're that expensive on the wheels you have, why not buy some smaller wheels? It might well work out cheaper over the course of a few years and will almost certainly make the car handle and ride better too.

Unfortunately the OP has given us no info on tyre size, wheel size, car ? So it's hard to steer him (forgive the pun) toward a decent buy. Really annoys me this kinda thing.mad

That's nearly (235s) my size! How much for fitting on top of that? Then it comes out nearly 150 a corner, surely?

Yeah pretty much, but the PSSs are seemingly about the best road tyres going from a performance perspective for which the price seems pretty reasonable smile
