Rust can be an issue with the MX5.
You're not kidding! I gave up looking for a mk2 MX5 because I couldn't find a single one that didn't have a rust issue (or enough flexibility in the price to put it right). The mk1s seem to be significantly better (certainly the imports) but I specifically wanted a 1.8iS with a slippy diff.

Did you manage to find one, OP?

Just reading through this, and thought I'd give my tuppence, since I've owned both a Mk2 MX5 (in fact two of them) and a Mk3 MR2 (which I still own).

Hands down, the MR2 is the better car. There's no which way about it - it just is. Dynamically it is much better, and whilst I hate the cliche, it really is 8/10ths of an Elise.

The MX5 is great fun if you like a bit of sideways action, and the storage is better. Depending on what you like, the long bonnet is quite nice too - always remember picking mine up and experiencing that.

The MR2 is just so ridiculously planted - it's great if you want a car for handling rather than messing around in. The storage is irritating at times, though the majority of the time it's fine. It is our only car, and I don't get annoyed by it often - mainly when doing the food shopping! The bonnet is a lot shorter on the MR2, which is great when you're pressing on. Having the engine behind you is ace.

Above all else, the single biggest annoyance of the MX5 for me is rust. For me, that strikes them out before you get to any of the good stuff.
